Webster, New York--On October 13, 2026, at approximately 6:45 pm, officers responded to Summitville Drive for a disturbance. While officers were working to stabilize the situation, the male resident caller reported to 911 that there was gas in his apartment. Officers smelled a strong odor of gasoline emitting from the apartment and directed the male to leave. When the male refused, the officers forced entry into the apartment and discovered the male had ignited a gas can. As officers approached, the male threw the lit gas can at the officers, igniting a fire inside the apartment. The officers were able to forcibly remove the male and then began clearing other residents from the area and attached apartments. Officers also used several fire extinguishers to attempt to knock the fire down.
Webster and West Webster Fire Departments responded and extinguished the fire, which was contained to the single unit. Penfield-Webster EMS also responded. The male resident was transported to RGH and admitted with minor injuries. Two officers were transported to Strong, one with a minor burn and both for smoke exposure. Both were treated and released a short time later. The Red Cross responded and assisted several residents who were temporarily displaced.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Monroe County Fire Bureau responded and conducted the fire investigation and assisted with tech work. We are working with the District Attorney’s Office, and more information will be released once charges have been filed.
