Fall has entered the chat.

Quaking aspens turn brilliant shades of yellow each fall, but what you see above ground is only part of the story.

An entire stand of aspens can be connected underground by a single root system, meaning what looks like hundreds of individual trees may actually be one genetically identical organism. The trunks can live for a century, while the roots beneath them can survive for thousands of years.

The things you see with LiDAR! This half-section line has been farmed over for decades, most recently enrolled in CRP in 2017. But there must have been a fence years ago that caught the blowing dirt of the dust bowl era. You can make out a definitive elevation change where the soil was deposited. While not noticeable to the naked eye, our landscape is forever changed from that time.
