❓️ What is your out-of-pocket going to be if you get sick?

🚨 Medicare Advantage Plans, run by for-profit insurance companies, continually limit or deny medical services when you need them the most, regardless of what your medical provider recommends. These insurance plans can save money if you are healthy, but if you get sick, your out-of-pocket expenses might skyrocket, especially for those who end up out of their ever shrinking network of hospitals and providers.

✅️ Traditional Medicare, when paired with a Medicare Supplement, offers more choice of medical providers without needing pre-approval for services they recommend, taking your well being out of the hands of a for-profit insurance company. Traditional Medicare offers monthly premiums that are consistent and budgetable, with little out of pocket when you get sick.

Big changes are coming to Medicare Advantage in 2027. According to Newsweek, several of the largest insurers are shrinking their networks next year:

➡️ UnitedHealthcare is cutting back its PPO plans in some areas.
➡️ Aetna is leaving two states and moving more members into HMO plans with smaller networks.
➡️ Humana will offer plans in fewer counties, falling from 85% to 80% of U.S. counties.

Rural communities often feel these changes the most. When a network shrinks, local doctors and hospitals can drop out of it. That can leave members driving an hour or more to find a provider their plan will cover, or switching doctors they've seen for years.

Traditional Medicare paired with a Medigap supplement plan works differently. You can see any doctor or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare, with no network to worry about, and you'll rarely need prior approval for care.

Open enrollment runs October 15 through December 7. If your plan is changing, now is the time to review your options.

We are so proud of Kelli Killian, RN, a 2026 Panhandle Great 25 honoree.

Kelli began as a nurse aide and went on to become Chief Nursing Officer at her hometown hospital, Collingsworth General. Many of the people who trained her early in her career are now members of the team she leads.

Several patients have called us after seeing charges on their Medicare Summary Notice (EOB) from a company called Airway Work, LLC in Tallahassee, Florida. The charges are for medical supplies and list Dr. Pickard at Collingsworth Family Medicine as the ordering provider.

Dr. Pickard and Collingsworth Family Medicine did not order these supplies. Medicare is denying the charges, but it's still important to report them. This kind of billing is often a sign that someone is misusing your Medicare number.

What you should do:

Look over your Medicare statement for any supplies or services you did not receive.

Call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048.

Have your Medicare card and statement ready when you call.

Keep yourself safe: Never give your Medicare number to anyone who calls, texts, or emails you out of the blue. Medicare will not call you to offer free supplies or equipment. If you aren't sure about something, hang up and call us.
