Most of us plug in our phones, power tools, or e-bikes and never think twice about it. But when a lithium-ion battery fails, it doesn’t just smoke—it fails violently, in seconds, creating intense heat and thick, toxic fumes.

Before you plug in today, keep these quick safety rules in mind:

🔌 Only use the charger that came with the device. Cheap aftermarket chargers bought online are a huge fire hazard. Look for safety certified marks like UL or ETL.

🚫 Never charge on soft surfaces. Skip the couch, bed, or carpet where heat gets trapped. Charge on a hard, flat surface like a workbench, desk, or concrete floor.

🚪 Don’t block your exit. Never park or charge an e-bike or e-scooter in a hallway, doorway, or stairwell. If it catches fire, your escape route is gone.

🔋 Unplug at 100%. Avoid charging gear overnight or leaving it plugged in while you're away from home.

🌡️ Avoid extreme temps. Don’t leave battery packs baking in a hot truck or freezing in an unheated shed.

⚠️ Warning signs to watch for:
If a battery pack is swollen, hot to the touch, making hissing or clicking sounds, or giving off a sweet, chemical smell—stop using it immediately.

If it starts smoking or catches fire: Do not try to fight it with a regular home fire extinguisher. Get everyone out, close the door to contain the smoke, and call 911 right away.

Stay safe out there! Feel free to share this with family and neighbors to help spread the word.

🚒 PUBLIC NOTICE: 2026 Fire Hydrant Testing Schedule 💧

The Wellington Water and Fire Departments will soon begin joint hydrant testing throughout the community. These routine tests ensure our equipment is in peak operating condition and help maintain our city's ISO readiness standards.

🗓 Schedule Details:

Testing begins Sunday, September 13, 2026, and will continue on weekdays only until all hydrants are completed.

The planned testing schedule for September 13 – September 23 covers:

Downtown: 2nd to 9th on Washington

Washington: 10th St. to 16th St.

Jefferson: 1st St. to 16th St.

“A” St. & “B” St.: Lincoln to 16th St.

“C” St.: 2nd St. to 15th St.

“A” St.: 21st St. out to the city limits

The Industrial Park

Wellington High School & the neighborhood east of the Hargis Creek Watershed

⚠️ What to Expect:

Crews will make every effort to keep the water clear. You may see some hydrants left running unattended at low volume—this is done intentionally to flush sediment and rust from the lines.

Nearby areas may experience temporary water discoloration ("dirty" water). If this happens, simply run your cold water taps for a few minutes until the water runs clear again before doing laundry or running appliances.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as our crews work to keep Wellington safe!

A quarter of a century has passed, yet the morning of September 11, 2001, remains sharply etched in our collective memory. Everyone who experienced that day carries the indelible weight of where they were, the immediate instinct to reach loved ones, and the sudden shift in our world.

Today, we pause to honor the thousands of innocent lives cut short and the heroic men and women who charged directly into devastation so that others might live.

In the wake of that tragedy, duty took center stage. An entire generation made the choice to put on the uniform. Troops deployed across the globe, law enforcement stood guard on the home front, and military households bore the quiet burdens of prolonged absence, constant worry, and profound loss. For many, that decision to step forward permanently rewrote the course of their lives and their families' futures.

Twenty-five years later, the impact of that collective resolve is all around us, reflected in the grit of our veterans, the enduring grace of our Gold Star families, and the steadfast support of fire, police, EMS and military spouses and children.

Honoring that commitment cannot stop at reflection. True reverence requires continuous, tangible support, standing beside those who put everything on the line, investing in their long-term well-being, and showing up when it counts most.

Today, we look back not just on the heartbreak of September 11, but on the profound bravery, selflessness, and sacrifice that rose to meet it.
To our veterans, service members, first responders, and the families who share the weight of service, we owe you a debt of gratitude.

We will always remember.

A firefighter does far more than fight fire.

All of the words in every training manual ever written can never cover what a firefighter does.

There are no guidebooks or checklists, no time clock or breaks.

When another person needs to be rescued, the firefighter keeps moving until the job is done.

Every person alive is covered by what the firefighter provides: people trained, able and willing to risk it all whenever there is a glimmer of hope.

And when things appear hopeless?

Firefighters appear.
