From Fire Chief Todd Beesley – Wellston Fire Department

On behalf of the Wellston Fire Department, I want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Wellston Masonic Lodge for sponsoring and hosting today’s fundraising event for our fallen brother, Firefighter Joe Flake, and his family.

A special thank you to Wellston Public Schools for generously allowing us to use the school cafeteria for this event.

I also want to personally thank Betty Waterston for opening the cafeteria and assisting our firefighters with the food line. Betty, your willingness to help and your support are greatly appreciated!

Thank you to the Fallis and Carney Fire Departments for taking the time to come out and show your support. It means a great deal to have our brothers and sisters in the fire service standing alongside us.

And finally, to the Wellston community — you never cease to amaze me!

Time and time again, this community steps up when someone is in need. Today was another shining example of the generosity, compassion, and tremendous heart of the people who call Wellston home.

I have to say, I saw some of the most expensive cookies and pies I’ve ever seen today, and I absolutely loved it! That kind of generosity says everything about this community!

The loss of Joe has been difficult for our department, but the outpouring of love and support for his family and our firefighters has been truly humbling.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who helped make today possible. We are proud to serve such an incredible community.

The Wellston Fire Department was excited to participate in the Wellston High School Career Fair!

Firefighters Brandon Gillentine and Dakota Haney had the opportunity to visit with students about the Wellston Fire Department, the fire service, and what it means to serve your community.

If you are 18 years old, you can serve your community as a volunteer firefighter with the Wellston Fire Department. While we are a volunteer department, serving with us provides valuable training and experience, an opportunity to learn about the fire service, and can open doors to a future career in the fire service or other areas of public safety.

Thank you to Wellston High School for inviting us to be part of the Career Fair and for giving students the opportunity to learn more about ways they can serve their community.

I want to take a moment to thank everyone who reached out to the Wellston Fire Department to express condolences following the line-of-duty death of Firefighter Joe Flake.

An account has been established at First Bank and Trust Company in Wellston to benefit Joe’s family. Donations may be made at any First Bank and Trust Company branch. Checks should be made payable to Sue Flake, with “Joe” written in the memo line.

Several people have also contacted us about organizing fundraisers for Joe’s family. We would like to help coordinate those efforts and will be reaching back out to everyone who has contacted us. If you have already contacted me and do not hear back, please reach out again. I sincerely apologize for any delayed or missed return calls.

The outpouring of support has been incredible, but at times it has also been overwhelming. I am doing my best to work through the missed calls, messages, and generous offers of assistance.

To everyone who attended Joe’s service on Saturday, reached out to his family or our department, offered assistance, or simply kept us in your thoughts and prayers—thank you. Those words do not begin to express what your support has meant to all of us at the Wellston Fire Department.

ATTENTION: OKLAHOMA FIRE DEPARTMENTS, EMS SERVICES, LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

If you are planning to attend the funeral of Wellston Firefighter Joe Flake on Saturday, September 12, at 10:00 a.m., apparatus parking will be available at the elementary school.

On the attached map, the apparatus parking area is marked in blue, and the church is identified by the red box. After parking their vehicles, first responders may walk from the designated parking area to the church.

Due to the very limited space inside the church, first responders are asked to gather outside the church during the service. Following the service, all first responders will line the street to honor Joe and his family as the procession departs for the cemetery.

Because the cemetery is very small, it would be logistically impossible for everyone and all emergency apparatus to proceed there.

We sincerely appreciate everyone’s cooperation, support, and presence as we come together to honor our brother firefighter, Joe Flake.

The funeral service for Wellston Firefighter Joe Flake will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the Missionary Baptist Church in Wellston, Oklahoma.

We will provide additional information regarding apparatus parking and other arrangements as those details are finalized.

I want to extend my deepest thanks to all the fire departments, law enforcement agencies, EMS services, emergency management agencies, and others who have reached out and so graciously offered their support. Several people have also contacted us about organizing fundraisers. Those efforts are in the works, and we will make the details public as soon as more information becomes available.

I apologize to anyone whose phone call or text message I have not yet answered. I am still working through the many messages we have received.

On behalf of the entire Wellston Fire Department, please know how truly grateful we are for our fellow public servants, our community, and everyone who has supported Joe’s family and our department during this difficult time.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Wellston Fire Department Mourns the Loss of Firefighter Joe Flake

It is with heavy hearts that the Wellston Fire Department announces the death of Firefighter Joe Flake.

Joe joined the Wellston Fire Department approximately four months ago. After retiring from a career as a truck driver, Joe wanted to continue serving by giving back to his community. He applied to join the department, successfully completed the same testing process required of every recruit, and earned his place on our roster.

On Monday, September 7, Joe was assisting crews at a large grass fire when he suffered a medical emergency. He was transported to the hospital, where he passed away later that evening.

The Wellston Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to Joe’s family and loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time, and we stand ready to support them in any way we can.

We are grateful for Joe’s service, his willingness to answer the call, and his commitment to serving his neighbors. His service and dedication will not be forgotten.

🔥 Wellston Fire Department Update 🔥

Wellston fire crews are returning to the station after responding to a vehicle fire on the Turner Turnpike eastbound between mile markers 160 and 161.

The vehicle fire was contained to the shoulder of the highway. The outside eastbound lane was temporarily closed while firefighters worked to contain and extinguish the fire.

The Wellston Fire Department was assisted by the Chandler Fire Department, and we greatly appreciate their response and assistance, especially while operating in these extreme temperatures.

We would also like to thank the Jacktown Fire Department for responding to a separate vehicle crash that occurred behind our incident near mile markers 159–160 eastbound while our crews were committed to the vehicle fire.

The fire has now been extinguished, the wrecker has possession of the vehicle, and Wellston fire crews are returning to the station.

As we continue through these excessive temperatures, please use extra caution outdoors and stay hydrated. Also, remember that a county-wide burn ban remains in effect. Please avoid any outdoor burning and help us reduce the risk of additional fires during these extremely dry and hot conditions.

Stay safe, Wellston.

🔥 LINCOLN COUNTY BURN BAN IN EFFECT 🔥

The Lincoln County Board of County Commissioners has issued a county-wide burn ban, effective immediately, due to the extreme fire danger currently affecting Lincoln County.

The combination of extreme heat, prolonged dry conditions, and rapidly drying vegetation has created a very dangerous situation for our citizens and for the firefighters who may be called upon to respond when a fire gets out of control.

Under the burn ban, open burning of grass, brush, trash, debris, cropland, and other wildland materials is prohibited, along with campfires and bonfires, except for specific activities allowed under the conditions outlined in the county resolution.

Certain cooking, welding/cutting, and agricultural activities may be permitted only when the specific safety requirements contained in the resolution are followed. Please read and follow those requirements carefully before conducting any activity that could produce a flame or spark.

I strongly encourage everyone to follow this burn ban closely and use extreme caution with anything capable of starting a fire. A single spark from equipment, a discarded cigarette, hot vehicle components, or other ignition source can quickly start a fast-moving vegetation fire under the conditions we are experiencing.

Please help us protect your homes, your neighbors, our community, and the firefighters who will be called into harm’s way if a preventable fire occurs. It should be noted that during a burn ban when we respond to fires caused my violations of the burn ban the normal fire department charges are doubled.

If you see a fire or believe a fire is getting out of control, call 911 immediately.

Thank you for doing your part to keep Lincoln County safe.

I want to address information circulating following a recent Facebook post by Guerilla Publishing.

At this time, no firefighters or members of the command staff have resigned from the Wellston Fire Department. Everyone remains on staff and continues to serve the Town of Wellston and the Wellston Fire District.

The Wellston Fire Department and our command staff are very grateful for the support shown by members of our community at last week’s special Town Board meeting. We are also grateful for the opportunity that came from that meeting to have meaningful conversation and communication regarding the department and its future.

I want to assure the community that everyone is still here, still serving, and still committed to answering the call and providing the best possible service to the people of Wellston and the Wellston Fire District.

Thank you for your continued support of the Wellston Fire Department.

Wellston Fire crews are currently on scene with the Chandler and Corey Fire Departments, working a rekindle from a grass fire that occurred earlier today.

The fire is located east of U.S. Highway 177 and south of 890 Road. Please use caution in the area and give emergency crews plenty of room to work.
