Training scenario. Wentworth Fire and EMS conducted a night time operation EMS training exercise on the Ames property last night. The scenario involved a hunter who had fallen from a tree stand during nighttime getting ready toget out of the stand and woods. The caller had gone in to find out why the patient had not come out to their meeting point.
The patient presented with a headache, vomiting, shoulder and knee injuries, and active seizures indicating a possible brain bleed. Deployment and equipment. Crews assembled in a field, received information and put dhart on alert right away, received more information about the patient’s condition and location, and deployed Engine 2 with the utility trailer. Equipment included the side-by-side, Stokes basket, rescue boggan, first-due bags, portable generator with lighting, extra blankets, and other rescue gear. Four personnel rode into the woods on side by side to locate the patient and begin care, while additional personnel walked in to assist.
Patient care and medevac coordination. Crews completed primary and secondary patient assessments. After determining that the patient was critical because of the head injury and active seizures, they simulated a DHART medical flight, obtained GPS coordinates, and assigned a crew member at the truck to establish a helicopter landing zone in the field where the patient would be brought out of the woods to .
Extraction and handoff. Crews packaged the patient, checked vital signs every five minutes, loaded her into the rescue boggan, and transported her to the landing zone. The landing zone officer provided updates on the helicopter’s estimated arrival time and confirmed when it was on the ground.
Training outcome. EMTs, EMRs, and firefighters worked together toward the same goal. The exercise provided valuable experience with equipment and operations that could be required on a similar call, including patient location and care, landing-zone coordination, rescue-boggan and side-by-side operation, stokes usage and communication among teams. OUR NIGHT TIME PICTURES WERE NOT GREAT we will try better next time out. Our crews enjoyed this training and had a good time while learning, there were waters and snacks back at the station and all operations were discussed and viewed to see where we needed improvement. A great team to work with!!
