Sunday evening has a particular feeling, and most people don’t say it out loud.

The weekend’s almost gone. Monday is sitting there. You can feel the week starting before it starts.

It’s common enough that it has a nickname, and it’s worth knowing it’s a real thing rather than a personal failing. Anticipating stress sets off the same response as the stress itself. Your body doesn’t know the difference between Monday and thinking about Monday.

A couple of things that help: finish one small thing tonight so tomorrow starts lighter, and put something you actually want to do somewhere in the week so Monday isn’t the only thing on the horizon.

How do you handle Sunday nights? Tell us below. Someone’s going to steal your idea and be grateful for it.

Today is World Mental Health Day.

There will be a lot of posts today telling you to check in on your strong friend, and that’s fine advice. But here’s the part that usually goes unsaid.

Checking in only works if you can handle the answer.

It’s easy to ask “how are you doing?” when you’re expecting “good, you?” It’s harder when someone actually tells you they’re struggling, because then you’re in it, and most of us immediately want to fix it, minimize it, or change the subject out of discomfort.

You don’t have to fix anything. You just have to not flinch.

“That sounds really hard. I’m glad you told me.”
“I don’t know what to say, but I’m not going anywhere.”
“Do you want me to help you find someone to talk to, or do you just need me to listen right now?”

That’s it. That’s the whole skill. Staying in the room is worth more than having the right words.

So yes, check in on someone today. And if they tell you the truth, let them.

If you’re the one struggling:
988 is free, confidential, and available 24/7. Call or text.
WAYS offers counseling on a sliding scale for Wayne Township residents. 630-231-7166.
NAMI DuPage runs free support groups and a helpline. namidupage.org.

It's Mental Illness Awareness Week, and here's something worth sitting with.

About one in five adults in this country lives with a mental illness. One in five.

That's not a distant statistic. That's your block. Your shift at work. The parents standing around at pickup. Some of the people you'd describe as having it all together.

Most of them you'd never guess, because people get very good at functioning while struggling. They show up, hit their deadlines, make the small talk, and go home exhausted from the effort of seeming fine.

Which means two things:

If that's you, you're not the exception you think you are. You're in extremely common company, even if nobody around you is saying it out loud.

And if it isn't you, it's someone close to you. Statistically, it has to be.

Mental illness is a health condition. It's treatable. People manage it and live full lives all over Wayne Township right now.

The thing that keeps people from getting help usually isn't the illness. It's the fear of what people will think.

So be someone it's safe to tell.

New month. Here's what October holds.

It's Mental Illness Awareness Week starting Sunday, ADHD Awareness Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and National Depression Education and Awareness Month. World Mental Health Day lands on the 10th.

That's a lot at once. What ties it together is pretty simple: most of what people carry is invisible to everyone around them, and the whole point of naming these things out loud is that it gets a little easier to say "actually, I'm struggling."

This month we'll be talking about what depression actually looks like day to day, what ADHD means for adults who were never diagnosed as kids, how to recognize when someone you love isn't safe, and where to find help locally for all of it.

It's also the month the weather turns and the holidays start appearing on the horizon. For plenty of people that's the hardest stretch of the year.

If that's you, you're not behind and you're not alone. We're glad you're here.

Today is the last day of September, which means Su***de Prevention Awareness Month and National Recovery Month are officially over.

The awareness months end. Nothing else does.

Nobody's depression checks a calendar. Nobody's recovery gets easier because the hashtags stopped trending. The people who were struggling in September are still here on October 1, and so is everything they're carrying.

So here's what stays:

988 is free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day. Call or text, any day of the year.

WAYS offers counseling for Wayne Township residents on a sliding scale. 630-231-7166.

NAMI DuPage runs free support groups and a helpline for individuals and families. namidupage.org.

And the thing we've said all month still holds: you do not have to be in crisis to ask for help. You just have to be tired of carrying it by yourself.

Save this post. Send it to someone. You never know when it'll be the thing somebody needed to see.

If you've ever thought "I need help, but I don't even know what I'm looking for," this one is for you.

NAMI DuPage is the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and they do something most people don't realize is available: free support for both people living with mental illness and the families around them.

That includes support groups, education classes for family members, and a helpline staffed by people who have been through it themselves.

That last part matters. When you call NAMI, you're often talking to someone who has sat exactly where you're sitting. Not reading from a script. Actually been there.

And it's free. There's no insurance to sort out and no intake paperwork standing between you and a conversation.

If someone in your family was recently diagnosed and you're overwhelmed, this is where to start.
If you've been supporting someone for years and you're worn out, this is where to start.
If it's you who's struggling, this is where to start.

Visit namidupage.org to find groups, classes, and the helpline.

You don't have to have it figured out before you reach out.

Fall officially started this week, and you can feel it in the evenings now. Dinner in the dark. Dark when the alarm goes off.

For some people that shift is barely noticeable. For others it's the start of a hard few months.

Seasonal changes in mood are real. Less daylight can affect sleep, energy, appetite, and motivation, and it usually creeps in slowly enough that people don't connect it to the season until they're already deep in it.

The useful thing about knowing this now is that you can get ahead of it:

Get outside in the morning if you can, even for ten minutes. Morning light does more for your body clock than light later in the day.

Protect your sleep schedule before the holidays start pulling it apart.

Keep something on the calendar. Plans get cancelled more in winter, and isolation makes everything heavier.

Notice the pattern. If last fall was rough, this is a good week to talk to someone, not February.

And if you already know winter is hard for you, say it out loud to somebody who will check on you. That one sentence does a lot of work.

Wayne Township residents can reach WAYS for counseling on a sliding scale at 630-231-7166.

Today is World Alzheimer's Day.

Most conversations about dementia focus on the person diagnosed, and they should. But today we also want to talk about the people standing next to them.

Caring for someone with dementia is one of the hardest things a person can do. It's physically exhausting and emotionally complicated. You can be grieving someone who is still sitting across the table from you. You can love them completely and still feel resentment, guilt, and loneliness in the same afternoon.

All of that is normal. None of it makes you a bad caregiver.

Dementia caregivers experience higher rates of depression and anxiety than almost any other caregiving group, and they're often the last to ask for help because they feel like there's no room for their own needs.

There is room.

If you're a caregiver: taking a break is not abandoning them. It's how you stay able to keep showing up.

If you know a caregiver: offer something specific. "Can I sit with your mom Thursday afternoon so you can get out?" lands much better than "let me know if you need anything."

The Alzheimer's Association runs a free 24/7 helpline for caregivers and families at 1-800-272-3900.

You're doing something enormously hard. You deserve support too.

September is National Recovery Month, and here's the part that doesn't get said enough.

Recovery isn't a solo act.

We tend to picture it as one person gritting their teeth and white-knuckling their way through. Willpower, discipline, doing it alone. That story is everywhere, and it's mostly wrong.

What actually sustains recovery is people. A sponsor who picks up at 11pm. A friend who plans something that doesn't revolve around drinking. A boss who doesn't ask questions about the standing Thursday appointment. A family member who stopped keeping score.

Which means recovery isn't only something individuals do. It's something communities either support or make harder.

If someone in your life is in recovery, you're part of it whether you signed up or not. A few things that help:

Keep inviting them. Being left out is isolating, even when they say no.

Don't make their recovery the topic every time you see them. They're a whole person.

Celebrate the milestones if they want that, and don't if they don't. Ask.

And if you're in recovery yourself, whether it's been twelve years or twelve days: that's real work, and it counts. We're glad you're here.

School has been back about three weeks now, which means the newness has worn off.

This is usually when things start showing. The first couple weeks run on adrenaline and fresh notebooks. Week three is when the real schedule sets in, when the friend group shakes out, and when a kid who is struggling stops being able to mask it.

It's true for adults too. Whatever you told yourself you'd do differently this fall, you know by now whether it's actually working.

So, a mid-September check-in, for you and for the people in your house:

Is anybody running on less sleep than they need?
Has anyone gone quieter than usual?
Is the schedule you built in August actually livable, or are you just powering through it?

Three weeks is early enough to adjust. Dropping one activity, moving bedtime, or asking for help now is a lot easier than doing it in November when everyone is depleted.

You're allowed to change the plan.
