Trellis clients and our Direct Support Professional (DSP) team visited the Willow Creek Railroad Museum in Salem, Oregon, for an afternoon exploring the museum's large-scale model railroad as a part of the 20+ events per month hosted and organized on the Trellis Community Activities calendar.

Our clients had a great time experiencing the museum! Thank you to Willow Creek for welcoming our clients, to the DSPs who made this visit possible and to our clients who came and tried something new.

Brian E. started a new job as a dishwasher and prep cook at Whole Foods recently, and was initially was very skeptical about being able to complete some of his responsibilities: prepping, cooking and bagging rotisserie chickens. He worried that he’d need constant support. And at first, this was true — our team helped him with reminders about cook timing in the oven and the location of ingredients. However, as Brian has gotten more comfortable with his tasks, he’s felt much more confident about them. Today, just a couple months into his role, he’s essentially fully independent in all aspects of his job, and continues to improve and get faster at his tasks almost every shift.

Despite his initial hesitations, Brian has grown to become an essential member of his team. We’re thrilled to have been a part of his success in this chapter of his journey!

This summer Trellis partnered with Vocational Rehabilitation counselors at Oregon Commission for the Blind (OCB) in participation with their Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP). SWEP provides opportunities for high school-age students to gain real-world work experience with local businesses, learn transferable skills, complete job specific tasks and increase on-the-job skills. Trellis Job Coaches worked closely with the participants to provide support, on-the-job guidance and even transportation to and from their jobs.

Our dedicated Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) provide individualized care and attention for our clients, including door-to-door transportation to and from events in our community program. DSPs also assist clients with more general activities, like visiting the library or going to the store.

“I find great joy watching them interact with the community and broader society,” Trellis Field Supervisor and DSP John says. “I can come to work every day and make noticeable improvements in their daily lives. This keeps me motivated, too.”
