❄️ Preparing for winter weather starts before temperatures drop!

Earlier this week, the Ouachita Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness joined emergency management directors from across our 12-parish region for a Winter Weather Preparedness Workshop.

Representatives from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP), and Louisiana National Guard were also in attendance.

This regional collaboration helps strengthen coordination, planning, and readiness so our communities are better prepared to respond when winter weather strikes.

A special thank-you to the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board for providing seafood for the event!

Preparedness is a team effort, and strong partnerships make stronger communities.

Stay alert. Stay aware. Stay prepared.

In a home fire, you may have only a few minutes to get out safely.

That’s why every household should have a fire escape plan that includes:
✔️ Two ways out of each room when possible
✔️ A designated meeting place outside
✔️ A plan for children, older adults, and pets
✔️ Regular practice so everyone knows what to do

During Fire Prevention Month, take time to make sure your family is ready before an emergency happens.

🔥 October is Fire Prevention Month, a reminder that a little preparation can make a life-saving difference.

Take time this month to make fire safety a priority in your home:

🏠 Create and practice a family escape plan
🚨 Test your smoke alarms
🔥 Keep heat sources away from anything that can burn
🧯 Make sure fire extinguishers are accessible and everyone knows how to use them
📍 Choose a safe meeting place outside your home

Don’t wait until there’s an emergency to decide what to do. Have a plan. Practice it. Be prepared.

Winds will be increasing out of the south on Wednesday, gusting to around 25 mph at times. This, combined with low relative humidity and dry fuels will make for favorable conditions for fire starts and spreads.

TEMPORARY BURN BAN IN EFFECT FOR OUACHITA PARISH

Due to current dry conditions and the increased risk of wildfires and uncontrolled fires, a temporary burn ban is now in effect throughout Ouachita Parish, including Monroe, West Monroe, Sterlington and Richwood.

🚫 During the ban, residents should not burn trash, garbage, leaves, limbs, branches, yard debris, construction debris or other debris, or conduct land-clearing burns or uncontained recreational fires.

The proclamation provides exceptions for certain agricultural burns conducted in accordance with state law, prescribed burns by certified personnel, cooking fires contained within grills or smokers, and recreational fires contained within fire pits or enclosures.

Please help protect lives and property by following the burn ban and sharing this information with others.

Stay alert. Stay aware. Stay prepared.

September is historically an active part of hurricane season, so don’t pack away your preparedness plans just yet.

Check your emergency supplies, review your family’s plan, keep important documents accessible, and continue monitoring trusted weather sources.

Even in North Louisiana, hurricanes and tropical systems can bring heavy rain, flooding, damaging winds, and power outages.
