๐Ÿ  RENTAL SCAM ALERT

The Howell County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a rental scam recently reported to our deputies.

Scammers are taking legitimate real estate listings from websites such as Zillow and other property listing platforms and reposting them on social media, including TikTok. These individuals are falsely advertising homes that are listed for sale as rental properties in an attempt to collect fraudulent deposits from unsuspecting individuals.

The fraudulent advertisements often include actual photographs taken from legitimate real estate listings. However, the contact phone numbers provided are not associated with the property's listing agent or authorized representative.

To ensure the property is actually available for rent or sale, it is recommended to look up the property on a real estate website such as Zillow or other popular real estate websites for verification. Scam accounts typically have a generic business name with a phone number but lack a physical office address and agent name.

Keep an eye out for AI-generated logos. Generally, a real estate company will list its office address and its broker or the agent operating the account and will have a professionally designed logo.

If you find these scam accounts or posts on social media, please report them to that app's support team using their reporting process. If you or someone you know has paid money to a scammer that has listed a "for sale" house as a rental, please contact local law enforcement to make a report.

BOIL WATER ADVISORY - 10/22/2026

A boil water advisory is in effect for the following areas in West Plains:

โ€ข First Street from Utah to Porter Wagoner
โ€ข Halstead Street from First Street to Webster Avenue

The impacted area is highlighted in the picture.

The advisory is precautionary while water samples are tested. We will provide an update when results are available and the advisory can be lifted.

Whatโ€™s the difference between an advisory and an order?

A boil water advisory is a precautionary notice issued when contamination is possible but has not been confirmed, such as following a loss of water pressure, water main break or repair.

A boil water order is issued when a public health threat or contamination has been confirmed and boiling water is required.

Residents can learn more about boil water advisories and orders from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources:

The Howell County Commission is advising residents of a significant structural concern involving the upper deck of the two-level parking garage located at the Howell County Office Building, 35 Court Square in West Plains.
Following reports of concrete falling from the ceiling of the lower level, the Commission requested an inspection by Great River Engineering. The engineering inspection found that a portion of the upper-level concrete deck has deteriorated enough to expose a substantial amount of the primary steel reinforcement.
According to the engineerโ€™s report, the exposed reinforcing steel shows extensive rust and deterioration, likely caused over time by salt applied during winter weather. As reinforcing steel rusts, it expands, which can cause the surrounding concrete to crack and break away. Engineers also observed additional sagging of the upper-level slab in the affected area.
Most importantly, the engineering report recommends that vehicle traffic be immediately eliminated from the affected portion of the upper deck in order to reduce the risk of further structural failure or possible collapse.
For that reason, barricades and parking restrictions will remain in place. Residents and visitors are asked to obey all barricades and avoid entering or parking in any restricted portion of the garage.
The Commission is now taking steps to further evaluate the structure and determine the most appropriate course of action. Great River Engineering has recommended developing a plan to either repair the existing structure or replace it, depending upon the results of additional investigation.
โ€œThis is first and foremost a public safety issue,โ€ said Howell County Presiding Commissioner Ralph Riggs. โ€œWhen our engineers tell us that an area needs to be taken out of service, we are going to follow that recommendation. We will work through the available options carefully and make the decision that best protects the public.โ€
The Howell County Commission will provide additional information as engineering work continues and repair or replacement options become available.

Ralph Riggs
Presiding Commissioner
Howell County

๐Ÿ”ŒNever plug a generator into a wall outlet. A qualified electrician should install it with a transfer switch to help prevent back feed, which can send electricity onto utility equipment and endanger lineworkers or others near downed lines. Helping to keep you and your loved ones safe: just one of the many benefits of being an electric cooperative member!

Hydration is Key
Always provide fresh, clean water for your pets, both indoors and outdoors. Adding ice cubes can help keep water cool longer, and offering water at regular intervals prevents dehydration. Signs of dehydration include panting, dry gums, and lethargy, so monitor your pets closely during hot weather
