PUBLIC NOTICE from Smurfit Westrock

Subject: Planned Emergency Response Training Exercise

Details: The Smurfit Westrock West Point mill will conduct a planned emergency response training exercise on October 22, 2026, between 9am – 3pm to evaluate preparedness, communications, coordination, and recovery procedures among mill personnel and local, regional, and state response partners.

A simulated scenario will provide the opportunity for mill workers, community response organizations and emergency management agencies to respond to an industrial incident then review and assess the outcome to further strengthen processes.

Residents may observe emergency response vehicles and personnel at or near the mill during the exercise. This is a planned training event, and there is no cause for alarm.

Conducting emergency response exercises help ensure responders are prepared to effectively protect employees, the community, and the environment during an actual emergency.

Town staff, The West Point Police Department, and the West Point Volunteer Fire Department look forward to participating in this exercise.

The Town of West Point is encouraging residents to prepare for the potential for coastal flooding over the next several days.

Per the US National Weather Service Wakefield VA, increasing tidal flooding is possible this weekend and into early next week, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

⚠️ Potential Impacts:

Coastal Flooding: Tidal flooding could impact low-lying neighborhoods, waterfront areas, and roads near the Mattaponi, Pamunkey Rivers, and York rivers.

Flooded Roadways: Some streets may become impassable during periods of high tide. NEVER attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Even shallow water can be dangerous, and water depth may be difficult to judge.

Gusty Winds: Winds may contribute to elevated water levels and prolonged tidal flooding.

Multiple High Tide Cycles: Flooding may occur repeatedly over several days, with the greatest impacts typically occurring around high tide.

🏠 What Residents Should Do:

Monitor weather forecasts and local alerts.

Move vehicles from areas prone to tidal flooding.

Avoid flooded streets and obey all road closure signs.

Allow extra travel time and plan alternate routes if necessary.

Check on neighbors who may need assistance.

πŸ“’ The Town will continue monitoring conditions and sharing updates as additional information becomes available.

🚨 REMEMBER: TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN! Never risk your life or your vehicle by driving through floodwaters.

πŸ’™πŸš” Small Town, Big Hearts! πŸš”πŸ’™

One of the many reasons we love our little town of West Point!

When Joyce is working late at MODR’S, our West Point Police Department never has a problem making sure she gets safely to her car.

It’s the little things like this that mean so much. Knowing that the men and women who protect our community also take the time to look out for the people in it is something we never take for granted.

This is what small-town living is all about β€” looking out for one another.

A heartfelt thank you to the West Point Police Department for always going above and beyond. Your kindness, dedication, and willingness to make someone feel safe do not go unnoticed.

We are proud to call West Point home! πŸ’™

With love and appreciation,
Your MODR’S Family ❀️
