3 versions, 100 years of history, 1 unmistakable Reno landmark. Happy 100th birthday, Reno Arch!

The first Arch was dedicated on October 23, 1926, and has had a few iconic looks over the years.

Here are a few fun facts:

• The original Arch was designed and built in San Francisco for $5,500 to celebrate the convergence of the Lincoln and Victory highways (Highway 40). It now stands on Lake Street near the National Automobile Museum.

• “Reno, Biggest Little City in the World” was chosen through a slogan contest. G.A. Burns of Sacramento won $100 for the winning entry.

• In 1963, a futuristic-looking Arch replaced the original to mark Nevada’s centennial. That version was later loaned to Willits, California where it still stands.

• The Arch spanning Virginia Street today is the third version. It was installed in 1987 and updated in 2018.

Big celebrations and a Mayor for the Day kicked off today’s Reno City Council meeting!

Mayor for the day Angel Sanabria, an 11-year-old student from Coral Academy, helped start the meeting. Her first order of business as Mayor? Less paperwork for all!

Council also celebrated three special proclamations:

Reno Arch Centennial Day: October 23 marks 100 years since the original Reno Arch was dedicated in 1926! A century later, the arch remains one of Reno’s most recognizable landmarks. The original arch on Lake Street was also recently added to the City of Reno Register of Historic Places.

Liberty Dogs Day: We recognized Liberty Dogs for its work providing highly trained service dogs to Veterans at no cost. We’re also proud to partner with the organization and welcome Reno, our very own Liberty Dog in training!

Reno Pops: We celebrated the orchestra for its dedication to sharing music, making the performing arts more accessible and enriching Reno’s arts and culture scene.

The National Weather Service says rain, gusty winds and possible thunderstorms are in the forecast tonight through Thursday, with snow possible at higher elevations. Some showers may bring heavy rain and localized flooding, especially in poor drainage areas and near recent burn scars.

Take extra caution if you live in or near these burn scars. After a fire, burned soil may repel water, allowing rain to run off quickly and carry ash, rocks and debris downhill.

Take time now to prepare:

• Clear leaves and debris from gutters and drains around your property.
• Fill sandbags if you need them.
• Never walk or drive through floodwater. Turn around and find another route.

City of Reno sandbag locations (bring a shovel; we have bags):

• Mira Loma Park, 3000 South McCarran Blvd.
• Moya Boulevard and Red Baron Boulevard
• Reno Fire Station #5, 1500 Mayberry Drive
• Horseman’s Park, 2800 Pioneer Drive
• Idlewild Park, Peace Officer Memorial, 2055 Idlewild Drive
• City of Reno Corporation Yard, 1640 East Commercial Row
