We voted this morning! I was proud to vote for Rob Sand for Iowa, Sarah for Iowa, Josh Turek, Nate Willems, and other great leaders on the ballot this year.

I also voted against the constitutional amendment. I don't like anything that makes it harder to make corporations pay their fair share.

As Rob’s family deals with the tragic loss of Christine’s brother, it’s important for those of us who love and support the family to step in and help where we can. I was honored to fill in for Rob Sand for Iowa in Black Hawk County last night to remind folks about the stakes of this election and Rob’s vision to be a governor for all. It was great to see the energy of the voters and the enthusiasm of Rob’s team.

I was thrilled to share the mic with Drew Stensland and to meet Vincent Collins - two future state reps filling big shoes next session. And of course seeing Jerome Amos always warms my heart.

It was a night filled with positivity, spirit, and hope as we celebrated Mary Madison and her campaign for re-election to the Iowa House. It was great to get together with State Senator Renee Hardman too - the three of us are so honored to represent Windsor Heights, Clive, and West Des Moines!

Mary serves with integrity and care and she’ll do great in her next term at the statehouse.

Heartbreaking news. Sending my love to Rob and Christine and the boys, and the entire family. Rob Sand is one of the most family-focused people I know and I’m hopeful the family can feel the love surrounding them during this time.

Today during the special legislative session called by Governor Reynolds, we considered HF 2801 – an expansion of the Major Economic Growth Attraction program to allow for potential construction of a steel mill in Southeast Iowa. I have fought for jobs and opportunities for growth in our state my entire career, including my time in the legislature. In fact, I voted for the original legislation. This project, if it happens, will bring jobs to SE Iowa. That can be a big win for Iowa.

That said, I personally could not support the legislation and I voted “no.” The policy is crafted for a particular project, and in my opinion there are still too many questions to justify allowing $1.4 billion in tax credits to this company. I also have concerns about provisions to protect taxpayers should the project fail at any stage.

I have faith in Iowa business leaders who want to help grow the economy. I do not have faith in the president or his promises. I do not have faith that this company will follow through on its promises, including those for good labor jobs. I do not have faith that this is more than a political stunt 32 days before an election. Our job is to pass laws in the best interests of Iowans, not to help political campaigns. I think the timing of this had more to do with politics than policy. If it’s a good deal on October 2 it should be a good deal on November 4.

I want Iowa to grow. In this case, I don’t think the policy is ready for prime time. That’s why I voted no.

The Governor has called the legislature back into special session this Friday to address what she is calling "the most consequential economic development opportunity ever for our state." She writes, "With reasonable and limited updates to an already-existing economic development program, we will accelerate major capital investment into our state, strengthen our economic trajectory, and shape the future of our state and region for generations."

This is related to an announcement about the potential for a steel plant coming to Iowa.

I have not yet seen the legislation and still have many questions myself, largely surrounding accountability and protections for taxpayers with this project - including the ability to make changes when/if things don't proceed as promised.

As we prepare, what questions do you have about the project that I can bring to this special session?
