Spring cleanup is taking place next week, June 1-5, so it's important to know what you need to do to have your items picked up. The collection will happen on your regular trash collection day. Make sure to put your items at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on that day. Remember that some items won't be picked up, such as appliances, yard waste, hazardous materials, construction debris, wood, and tires. When you're deciding if something is okay to put out for Spring Cleanup, think about whether two people could lift it.

The City of West Des Moines is partnering with representatives from Jordan Creek Town Center and the fireworks team to prepare for the upcoming 4th of July celebration. On Sunday, May 17, at approximately 9:15 p.m., the fireworks team will conduct a test discharge of several fireworks. This test is crucial to determine the best location for the fireworks display on the day of the event. Our goal is to ensure that families can enjoy the show and have access to information about the best viewing spots. Approximately 15 shells will be discharged between 9:15 and 9:45 p.m.
In previous years, the fireworks celebration has been held at the complex near City Hall; however, this year, it will be relocated to Jordan Creek Town Center. This new location offers more space for families and visitors, allowing a larger audience to come together and enjoy the festivities.
The parade is scheduled for Friday, July 3, followed by the fireworks celebration on Saturday, July 4.

This evening I had the honor of being the emcee for the West Des Moines Cinco de Mayo Celebration at the Valley Junction Farmers Market/Music In The Junction.
This year’s King is Jack Murillo and the Queen is Catherine Gallardo Martinez.
This is a wonderful event that honors the Mexican families that moved to Valley Junction to work for the Rock Island Railroad and the cement plants.
There is a long list of Mexican families that still call West Des Moines home and I am happy to call many of them my friends.

I am proud to say, that as a City Council, we have been able to help our residents by reducing their city property tax rate.
📉 This is West Des Moines: A Decade of Lower Property Tax Rates
Over the past 10 years, thoughtful financial planning has helped reduce the City’s property tax levy rate from $12.00 to $10.80 per $1,000 valuation — a 10% decrease.
FY17/18: $12.00 → FY25/26: $10.80
🌟 As our community has grown, we’ve worked to maintain strong services while responsibly managing the tax rate for residents.
