West Volunteer Fire Department Improves ISO Rating (Public Protection Classification) from Class 5 to Class 3.
West Volunteer Fire Department is proud to announce that its ISO Public Protection Classification will improve from Class 5 to Class 3. This marks a significant achievement for our volunteer department and the residents and businesses within our first-due response area.
The improved classification reflects a commitment to strengthening fire protection through training, equipment readiness, water supply capabilities, and cooperation with our emergency response partners.
What does the rating mean?
ISO, the Insurance Services Office, evaluates community fire protection on a scale from Class 1 to Class 10, with Class 1 representing the highest classification. Moving from Class 5 to Class 3 represents a substantial improvement in recognized fire protection capabilities.
The Class 3 rating classification:
- Class 3 generally applies to eligible properties within five road miles of a recognized fire station and within 1,000 feet of a creditable water supply.
The classification for an individual property depends on its location and eligibility. Being within West Fire-Rescue’s first-due area—the area where our department is the primary responding fire department—does not automatically qualify every property for Class 3.
What does it take to accomplish this?
An improved ISO classification requires much more than having fire trucks in the station. ISO evaluates emergency communications, firefighter staffing and training, apparatus and equipment, station locations, and water supply capabilities.
For a volunteer department, supporting these capabilities requires countless hours of commitment. Members must train, inspect and maintain equipment, test apparatus and hose, practice water supply operations, and document their work. Accurate records help demonstrate that the department can meet the requirements being evaluated.
Rural water supply presents additional challenges. Where hydrants are limited, reliable alternatives may include drafting from approved water sources and using tankers to transport water. These operations require equipment, planning, practice, and coordination with neighboring departments.
Achieving and maintaining an improved classification takes sustained financial support, volunteer dedication, and cooperation among the fire department, emergency communications personnel, county officials, neighboring departments, and water providers.
What does this mean for property owners?
The improved classification may provide an opportunity for lower homeowners or commercial property insurance premiums. Many insurance companies consider ISO classifications when evaluating properties and setting rates.
Each insurance company determines how it uses the classification, so savings are not automatic or guaranteed. Property owners should contact their insurance agent, provide the effective date, and request a review of the classification assigned to their address.
A helpful question to ask is:
“West Volunteer Fire Department’s ISO classification is improving to a Class 3. Does my property qualify, and will this affect my insurance premium?”
An accomplishment made possible by community support
West Fire Department is a 100% volunteer organization. Our members give their time to answer calls, attend training, maintain equipment, and prepare for emergencies. Their families also make sacrifices that allow them to serve.
City of West, community donations, support at fundraisers, and public funding help sustain that readiness. This improvement demonstrates the value of continued investment in local fire protection.
We thank our members, their families, our partner agencies, and the residents and businesses who support our mission. Moving from Class 5 to Class 3 is an accomplishment we can all take pride in as we continue working to protect our community.
Special Thank You to Chief Mitchell and Fire Inspector Graham for their hard work toward a Class 3 ISO rating.
Your support helps keep us ready when you need us most.
