A message to our Westborough Residents, regarding gun licensing and ownership:
You have until OCTOBER 28, 2026, to comply with serialization and registration requirements.
Under Chapter 135 of the Acts of 2024, the “Act Modernizing Fi***rm Laws,” Massachusetts significantly expanded fi***rm registration requirements. The Act took effect October 2, 2024.
Brief summary of the registration requirements
All fi***rms possessed, manufactured, or assembled in Massachusetts must be registered through the state's electronic fi***rms registration system (https://gunportal.mass.gov/mircsUnifiedPortal/)
Massachusetts moved from primarily recording fi***rm transactions through licensing/dealer systems to a requirement that the fi***rm itself be registered in a statewide electronic system, with additional reporting requirements when fi***rms are transferred, lost, or stolen.
Registration generally must occur at the time of import, purchase, acquisition, manufacture, or assembly.
There are specific exceptions to the normal timing:
New Massachusetts residents: 60 days to register fi***rms they bring into the Commonwealth.
Heirs/devisees: 60 days after acquiring a fi***rm through an estate.
Licensed dealers, gunsmiths, distributors, and manufacturers: 7 days after importing a fi***rm.
Privately made fi***rms: 7 days after manufacture or assembly.
Fi***rm transactions—including sales, purchases, rentals, leases, loans, and other transfers—generally must be reported by all parties within 7 days.
Lost or stolen fi***rms must be reported electronically within 7 days, including identifying information such as the make, model, serial number, caliber, and whether it is a large-capacity fi***rm.
The law also establishes serialization requirements, including requirements for privately made fi***rms.
Failure to register a fi***rm or report a transaction, loss, or theft can result in escalating penalties, including fines and potential imprisonment for repeat offenses, and can be grounds for suspension or revocation of a fi***rm license, card, or permit.
