We have a new member of our team! Please give a warm welcome to Emily Algeo, PRLT's new Development Coordinator πŸ‘ Emily grew up in Raymond and has a background in both political research and farming. Her life has been shaped by access to natural spaces, and she is deeply committed to protecting the land and preserving that experience for generations to come.

If you attended annual meeting last weekend, you already had a chance to meet Emily, but everyone can learn a little more about her in our recent blog post: https://www.prlt.org/blog/2026/10/14/meet-emily-algeo

UPDATE: Weather conditions tomorrow 10/24 look unfavorable, so the prescribed burn planned for Steep Falls Village Preserve is being postponed. With the Maine Forest Service rating fire danger as "high"across Southern Maine, and with light winds coming out of the northwest that would likely cause smoke to linger in residential areas, we feel this is the best course of action at this time. We will share the new target date as soon as it is confirmed, but it will likely be in the spring.

We've been out and about in our community a lot this month! At Go Outside Gorham's Fall Fest (shoutout to Gorham (ME) Recreation Department for a great event!) we asked people "what is your favorite thing to do outside?" And the responses were silly, sweet, and so much fun to read that we just had to share them.

What's your favorite thing to do outside? Drop it in the comments!

Saturday morning we joined with Town of Windham, Maine, Windham Parks & Recreation, and Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation to mark the official renaming of Windham Community Forest and the opening of the Universal Access Trail πŸ™Œ After brief remarks and a ribbon cutting in the Atherton Hill Trailhead (formerly East Windham Conservation Area) parking lot, we walked and rolled our way up the UA Trail to the summit to admire the view together.

This new one-mile trail is designed with a low grade and smooth path so wheelchairs, strollers, and other users with mobility concerns have access to the outdoors. The one-mile trail stretches from Atherton Hill Trailhead to the White Mountains Overlook and was partially funded by the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

For more info about the UA Trail and the merging of East Windham Conservation Area and Lowell Preserve, check out our blog post https://www.prlt.org/blog/2026/10/2/re-introducing-windham-community-forest

It was a gorgeous Sunday afternoon at Randall Orchards for Annual Meeting! Two hours flew by as we celebrated another year of all things PRLT. Big thanks to Keith Carson who stopped in to talk about our changing climate and how we can communicate more effectively to protect the lands and waters we treasure.

Our board and staff are feeling grateful to have so many people invested in this work. Thank you to all our members, volunteers, partners, and community members who make the work of conservation possible and deeply rewarding.

Look at that crew! Volunteers from Evergreen Credit Union spent Indigenous Peoples' Day at Mill Brook Preserve walking all the trails and helping us inventory fallen trees, dangerous roots, and broken bridge decking that is in need of a little TLC. Massive thanks to this team for helping PRLT staff keep this large preserve safe for our community to enjoy - we're so grateful for your partnership!

We are planning to conduct a controlled burn at Steep Falls Village Preserve on Saturday, October 24, in partnership with Standish Fire-EMS. Mill Street will be closed the entire day, along with Mill Street Park and the trail network on the Steep Falls Village Preserve. After the burn, the preserve may be closed for up to a few weeks to monitor conditions for safety.

Prescribed fires are common tools for managing grasslands and vegetation in the southern parts of the United States, but are relatively new concepts to our area. We know people may be wondering: what is a prescribed fire? And why are we doing one at Steep Falls? Abigail has been preparing us for this burn for months, and is here to give lots of background (including how she personally became interested in this management practice) in our latest blog post –

This fall, PRLT is conducting its first prescribed fire. But what exactly does that mean? Abigail steps in to explain how and why burns are safely used for land management.
