It's a beautiful morning in the gardens, and yet again it's incredibly warm for the season! The birds and bees are taking advantage of the continuing pleasant weather to really stock up for the winter--the birds in particular are furiously devouring the native plant seeds. Any foray into the gardens startles an entire flock of goldfinches or juncos, not to mention the three or four blue jays who visit to yell at everyone. Stop by before it rains to enjoy the crunchiest of autumn leaves, and the remaining beautiful blooms!

It's a beautiful morning in the gardens, and it continues to be shockingly warm for the season! Even though our lone maple tree is fully red, it's warm enough that we still have several types of bee--and even the occasional wasp!--visiting the gardens. We cannot deny that the only things still blooming are the New England (purple) and American (white) asters and the goldenrod, but the pollinators don't seem to mind! Meanwhile the milkweed, coneflower and ironweed are scattering their own seeds to prepare for next spring. Come spend some time with our weird bees before they settle in to their nests for the winter!

It's a beautiful morning in the gardens, and it feels like every migrating bird passed by the library last week! Not only has our usual winter flock of juncos returned early, but more than a dozen extremely boisterous yellow-rumped warblers took up residence in the juniper tree in the parking lot, their antics eventually attracting a pair of young kestrel hawks. Meanwhile our prairie plants are in their final wind-down for the year. We have enough still-blooming asters and goldenrod to attract all the remaining bees and wasps, but most of what you can see has gone to (delectable-to-birds) seed. Stop by if you, too, would like to be yelled at by a bunch of cheeky warblers!

It's a beautiful morning in the gardens, and we're nearing the end of what MIGHT be the fall's last warm spell. The asters and goldenrod are thriving (if gently winding down), and there are a few coneflowers, sunflowers and primroses still hanging on. (And a few surprisingly resurgent obedient plants, but we doubt those will last the week). While honeybees, sunflower bees, cabbage butterflies and even the occasional bumblebee are still to be seen, at this point in the year you're more likely to see birds raiding the plants seed-heads (and catching tiny bugs). There are goldfinches, starlings and robins everywhere, of course, but we've also spotted an American redstart, an eastern phoebe and a tufted titmouse. Stop by while the weather is still nice, to see what's changed since your last visit!

It's a beautiful morning in the gardens, and we're finally seeing some milkweed seeds! Our common milkweed pods are still tightly shut, but the swamp milkweed is sending floof left and right. Meanwhile every variety of bee is consuming as much aster pollen as possible, while the wasps do the same to the milkweed. (The extremely judgmental goldfinches are only interested in the sunflowers and the rosinweed). It's supposed to be warm and sunny all week, so stop by to check out how interesting even a fall garden can be!

It's a beautiful day in the gardens, and it's truly aster season! We have white American asters, pale lavender silky asters, dark purple New England asters, and the coveted pink mutation of New England asters. (There's no way to predict which aster plants, if any, will produce pink blossoms in any given year, so we're always surprised). Meanwhile the goldenrod continues to be catnip (as it were) to wasps and other pollinators, the tail end of the blue lobelia and evening primrose are providing nectar to some late-lingering hummingbirds, and the sunflowers, rosinweed and coneflowers are producing seedheads for the seed-eating birds' delectation. Stop by to experience this singular, early-fall moment!

It's a beautiful morning in the gardens, and after a cool, rainy weekend, we can no longer deny that it's Fall! Our Autumn flowers--asters, sawtooth sunflowers and goldenrod--are more dramatically in bloom every day, and some earlier summer plants--ironweed, evening primrose, even spiderwort!--are unexpectedly putting forth new blossoms. There are, of course, quite a lot of senescent plants and dried-out seedheads amongst the flowers, but that's why we can see feeding goldfinches right alongside Peck's skippers. Meanwhile, keep your eyes open over the next few weeks, and you'll see all of our foliage, not just leaves on trees, changing to fall colors!
