⚠️ CUSTER COUNTY WEATHER UPDATE
HEAVY RAIN & FLASH FLOOD RISK
Custer County is preparing for a significant weather event through Thursday. Current forecasts indicate 2–3 inches of rain may fall across the region and possible more in some areas, with saturated ground increasing the potential for flooding, flash flooding, mud and debris flows, road impacts, and rapidly changing conditions.
The greatest concern remains the Aspen Acres Fire burn scar, particularly from Aspen Acres south along Highway 165 toward Lake Isabel. Recently burned terrain may not absorb water normally. Heavy rain can move quickly downslope, carrying mud, ash, rocks, trees, and debris into drainages, culverts, roads, and low-lying areas. Burn scars can produce significant flash flooding and debris flows when heavy rain develops.
Hazards to watch for
🌧️ **Flash flooding** in drainages, creeks, culverts, washes, and low-water crossings.
⛰️ **Mud and debris flows** below burned slopes and in drainage channels.
🌬️ **Strong winds** with the potential for downing trees and powerlines, especially where soils are saturated.
❄️ **Snow at higher elevations**, which may create difficult travel conditions in mountain areas.
🚧 **Road closures and washouts**, particularly on roads near drainages or below burned terrain.
Take action now
- Avoid creeks, drainages, culverts, washes, low-water crossings, and roads below burned slopes.
- Never drive, walk, or ride through floodwater, mud, debris, or around barricades.
- If a Flash Flood Warning is issued or water begins to rise, move to higher ground immediately. Do not wait to see water at your location.
- Keep phones charged, have vehicles fueled, and prepare for the possibility of power interruptions.
- Secure loose outdoor items and use caution around trees and powerlines during strong winds.
- Sign up for Custer County Everbridge Emergency Alerts through the Custer County Office of Emergency Management website: https://custercounty-co.gov/departments/emergency-management/
- Use more than one method to receive warnings. A battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio is recommended; the primary local station is KJY-81, Canon City, 162.500 MHz.
