Tomorrow, Oct. 8, the City of Westerville will conduct a controlled burn of cattails in the Alkyre Run Wetland behind the Westerville Community Center (350 N. Cleveland Ave.).
The time of the controlled burn will depend on the weather and last a few hours. If you visit the area near the Community Center during the day, please be advised that smoke may linger.
Why do we do this? And how do we ensure this process is safe? ๐พ
๐ชพ Cattails are invasive and prevent native plants from growing in the wetland. This project is part of the Alkyre Run restoration, helping to restore the habitat's health and floodplain management.
๐ฅ Pulling cattails disturbs the soil and bio-materials of the sensitive wetland. This can also disrupt dormant cattail seeds, creating even more invasive growth in the region. Experts determined a burn was the best approach.
๐ฉโ๐ Restoration experts and the Westerville Division of Fire will be present during the burn to monitor air quality and ensure the safety of the public and wildlife.
๐ฆ Controlled burns are conducted outside of peak mating and nesting seasons. Animals will burrow or travel to adjacent areas and return shortly after. The burn will clear dense foliage, encouraging native food sources that benefit the wetland's wildlife.
