Joseph Grice
"My bird paintings are a tether between the natural world, and human emotion. Each piece represents a moment in time in a story both untold, and well known. Bravery, wisdom, strength, beauty, and joy are among the traits portrayed in these anthropomorphic characters. They are reflections of ourselves, displaying characteristics that we can admire and live up to. They represent a reminder that clarity can come from the smallest of moments, and that we are all connected to nature in profound ways. These bird portraits explore what it means to be truly human, through the lens of ornithological illustrations."
"Joseph Grice is a muti-disciplined artist and educator from Jamestown, NY. He has taught fine art at Infinity Visual and Performing Arts in Jamestown, Holt School of Fine Art in Charlotte, NC, and continues to teach workshops at Chautauqua Art Gallery in Jamestown. In love with the process of making art, and endlessly inspired by nature, Grice paints highly detailed bird portraits in oil paint, celebrating the unique wildlife of our region, and reflecting traits and emotions that we see in ourselves through the birds that surround us.
Influenced by famed Jamestown Naturalist Roger Tory Peterson, Grice chooses a more conceptual, story-telling approach to ornithological illustration that bridges the gap between science & contemporary art. Grice has displayed work in galleries and museums in New York, Vermont, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Virginia, North Carolina, and California. In 2026, Grice was awarded a NYSCA grant sponsored by Arts Services Inc. for an upcoming mural project to be displayed outside of Chautauqua Art Gallery, in Jamestown, NY. "
