Westford receives federal funding for new firefighting equipment!

We are excited to announce that the Westford Fire Department has been awarded $44,081 through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program to replace fire hose and equipment used to establish water supplies for firefighting operations.

Each of our fire engines carries approximately 1,400 feet of 4-inch hose. During a fire, this hose can be laid from a hydrant or other water source to establish a continuous water supply, essentially creating a temporary water main between the water source and our fire engines.

While we have been working to replace this hose in small quantities through our operating budget and other local grant opportunities, much of our fleet continues to carry hose that is nearly 30 years old. As it ages, the hose jacket can deteriorate, while older fittings and adapters can create compatibility issues with newer equipment. A failure during a fire can interrupt the water supply and create a potential safety hazard for firefighters operating at the scene.

This grant will allow us to replace all of the 4-inch supply hose carried across our fleet, providing our firefighters with newer, more reliable equipment while reducing the cost to the Town.

Thank you to Chief Denehy and the members of the department who contributed to the grant application process, whose efforts helped make this possible. We are grateful for this federal investment in the safety of our firefighters and the community we serve.

It’s happening! After years in the making, construction has begun on our new tower truck!

At Annual Town Meeting in June 2023, as part of the Town’s Capital Improvement Plan, voters approved $2,150,000 for the replacement of our tower truck. This vehicle is equipped with a 100-foot ladder and working platform that allows firefighters to reach the upper floors of a building during an emergency.

Our larger commercial properties and the addition of new four- and five-story multiunit apartment buildings require a way to reach areas our traditional ground ladders cannot. The tower’s 100-foot reach also gives firefighters a safer platform to reach the upper floors of ordinary homes to perform rescues, access roofs to ventilate smoke and heat, and extinguish fires. Additionally, our tower truck is used to assist other Town departments when its capabilities are needed.

This process began in early 2022, when our current tower truck was approaching 21 years old and maintenance costs were rising. With fire departments across the country experiencing significant delays in procuring new apparatus, we asked the Town to fund its replacement ahead of schedule due to the extended time required to build and outfit this specialized equipment.

Since then, our current tower truck has experienced a catastrophic failure, rendering it out of service indefinitely and requiring us to rely on neighboring communities when an incident calls for this type of specialized equipment.

After years of meticulous planning and preparation, construction has finally begun at the Seagrave plant in Clintonville, Wisconsin. We anticipate delivery in early 2027.

We’d once again like to thank the community for its continued support and trust in giving us the tools we need to keep people safe. We look forward to sharing more updates as our new Tower takes shape!

CHELMSFORD — Fire officials from three area towns met earlier this month to discuss how to handle fires in a rural area of South Chelmsford.

09/23/2026

At approximately 6:30 PM this evening, the Westford Police and Fire Departments responded to a medical incident on the Mystery Springs trail system between Dana Drive and Buckboard Drive.

Due to the large area involved and the initial uncertainty regarding the exact location of the individual requiring assistance, a large public safety response was dispatched to locate those involved. Police and fire personnel entered the woods from both Dana Drive and Buckboard Drive.

The individual was located, and medical aid was provided. They were subsequently transported to an area hospital for further treatment and evaluation.

This was a medical incident, and there was no threat to public safety. Due to the medical nature of the call, no further information will be released.

The Westford Police Department would like to thank the responding police officers, fire department personnel, and Public Safety Communications telecommunicators for their coordinated response and assistance in locating and providing aid to the individual.

🚗 CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY WEEK | SEPTEMBER 20–26

This week is Child Passenger Safety Week, a time to remind parents and caregivers about the importance of making sure children are properly secured every time they ride in a vehicle.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for children. NHTSA and the Westford Police Department urge parents and caregivers to double-check that their children are riding in the right car seat for their age and size — whether that’s a rear-facing car seat, forward-facing car seat, or booster seat — and that the seat is installed correctly.

Kids can change as quickly as the weather. As they grow, take a minute to check that they’re in the right car seat for their age and size.

The Westford Police and Fire Departments offer FREE car seat checks and installations by certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians.

📅 To schedule an appointment, visit:

A few minutes checking your child’s car seat today can make a big difference in their safety tomorrow.

Introducing our newest career Firefighter/EMTs, Matthew Livingston and John Tobon!

Both are new to the fire service but join us with experience working as EMTs with Pridestar/Trinity EMS. Monday marked day one for the pair, beginning with a week-long orientation that includes meeting members from all four shifts, familiarization with the community and department equipment, completion of mandatory training, and a review of department policies and EMS protocols.

Next week, they will report to their assigned shifts, where they will continue their development under the guidance of their preceptors and our dedicated team of professionals. In addition to completing their in-house training requirements, the duo will be busy preparing to attend the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s 10-week Career Recruit Firefighter Training Program. Looking further ahead, both plan to continue their education to become paramedics, an endeavor requiring approximately 1,400 additional hours of classroom and field training.

While a considerable amount of work lies ahead, we look forward to helping Matthew and John achieve their career goals and watching them grow and thrive as members of our department.

Congratulations, gentlemen, and welcome to the best job out there! We wish you both the very best as you begin your careers here in Westford.
