Last night just after 9pm Westcom dispatch center took several calls from residents in the Prestwick neighborhood. They were reporting a fawn stuck in the mud along the shoreline of a retention pond. Their mother was there calling out for them but they couldn’t scale the wall around the edge of the pond.
Westlake firefighters from Station 1 on Crocker rd. responded to the scene to try to devise a plan to rescue the two stranded fawns. Several neighbors had gathered after hearing the deer calling out for each other. Naturally, the fawns were stranded at the most remote area of the pond. Thankfully, a resident offered use of their paddle boat for the rescue mission. Firefighter Erdani donned a dry suit and Captain Kovats shuttled him across the pond on the paddle boat. When they arrived at the far side of the pond they found two fawns stuck in the mud at the base of the wall. Firefighter Erdani disembarked and made his way over to them. He was able to lift them over the wall and safely back on dry land. Captain Kovats and Firefighter Erdani then returned across the pond to their original port where they were greeted by happy neighbors.
