We’re honored to share a portion of this message from Senator Tim Kaine as we continue bringing greater visibility to the story and legacy of Elizabeth Key.

In 1656, Elizabeth Key successfully sued for her freedom, becoming a significant figure in the early legal history of Virginia. Her story is an important part of the larger American story and tomorrow, we will officially unveil a historic marker honoring her legacy.

Did you know Johnny Depp is the 8th great grandson of Elizabeth Key Grinstead?

Elizabeth Key’s story is one of courage, resilience, and a landmark moment in Virginia history. In 1656, she successfully sued for her freedom, making history as the first Black woman in the American colonies known to win her freedom through the courts. Her story didn’t end there. Today, we’re continuing to uncover, share, and honor her legacy.

Next week, the Northern Neck Hidden History Trail will unveil a historic landmark honoring Elizabeth Key.
