UPDATE TO CANCER FLYER:
The flyer has been updated to reflect that proceeds will be evenly donated to the Sutter Health Radiation and Oncology Center in Auburn, CA, and the Adventist Rideout Foundation/Cancer Center in Marysville, CA.
Yesterday, I shared a personal experience with cancer to convey a human aspect. I apologize for sharing my story, as it clearly seems to be a mistake, but my intention was to highlight the importance of cancer awareness. After some consideration from a citizen's perspective, I have added the cancer center in Marysville as a recipient of an equal share of the funds raised through this campaign.
There was nothing unethical regarding this awareness program. I did not misrepresent anything; I clearly stated where the donation would go and why. Since yesterday, before any patch donations were made, I pulled the cancer awareness patches paid for by the department and am only using patches that were donated by me personally and by the Police Officers' Association.
Cancer Centers are regional and treat patients from across the region, including all surrounding cities and counties. The center in Auburn does not treat only patients from Auburn or Placer County, and the center in Marysville does not treat only patients from Wheatland, Marysville, or Yuba County. Lastly, donations for these patches do not come only from Yuba County or Wheatland residents; they are made by citizens from many different cities and counties who like the patch or believe in the cause.
We are very appreciative of your support for this campaign, as cancer affects us all.
Respectfully
Michael Garlock
Chief of Police
