Many people associate butterflies with spring, but did you know that many species fly as adults in the fall? Some butterflies migrate south, like Monarchs and Painted Ladies. Others take advantage of the many flowers that bloom in the fall, such as this Gray Hairstreak butterfly drinking from a goldenrod flower in our Fragrance Garden.

A spooky seasonal surprise is blooming by Brookside’s Visitor Center entrance! Ceropegia sandersonii, known as the parachute flower, is putting on a beautifully haunting display.

Native to southeastern Africa’s mild climate, the parachute flower can bloom throughout the year—so its spooky timing is a happy coincidence! If you know the popular houseplant string of hearts (Ceropegia woodii), you may be surprised to learn that this wonderfully unusual plant is a close relative.

Believe it or not, both these vining Ceropegias belong to the family Apocynaceae (the dogbane family) which makes them close relatives of Plumerias, milkweeds, Hoyas, Mandevillas, and the bedding annual known colloquially as “Vinca”. That's incredible when you stop to think about how varied these different flowers look!

Have you glimpsed our tropical pitcher plant in the North Conservatory? Nepenthes may look otherworldly, but those colorful “pitchers” are actually specialized leaves. Nectar along the rim attracts insects, which can slip into the fluid-filled chamber below. In the lower part of the pitcher is a gland that absorbs nutrients from these trapped insects. This clever adaptation helps the plant obtain nutrients that are scarce in the soils where it naturally grows.

Stop by the North Conservatory on your next visit and take a closer look at one of the plant world’s most fascinating survival strategies.
