Documenting abuse can be an important tool for recognizing patterns and preserving information about what someone is experiencing.

For survivors, documentation may also help validate their experience. This can include keeping a journal, recording dates and details of incidents, saving threatening messages or emails, and documenting technology-facilitated abuse.

But documentation should never come at the expense of safety. If someone’s device or accounts may be monitored, storing evidence can create additional risk. Learn more about documenting abuse, including ways to safely preserve information: https://www.thehotline.org/resources/documenting-abuse/

Abuse can leave behind scars no one else can see, including hypervigilance, anxiety, self-doubt, difficulty trusting, intrusive memories, emotional numbness, fear of conflict, or a nervous system that remains on alert long after the immediate danger has passed.

Not every scar is visible. Not every wound stops hurting when the abuse ends. đź’ś

School safety is everyone’s responsibility. It is built through prevention, early intervention, education, accountability, and meaningful support for survivors. When we create school communities where students know they will be heard, believed, respected, and connected to help, we do more than respond to violence, we help prevent it and create environments where every young person has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
