The average DuPage paycheck went up 2.8% last year. The County Board Chair's salary is set to jump 40%, from $131,559 to $185,000. Affordability starts at the top.

It's simultaneously an honor and humbling to be endorsed by the Chicago Tribune for my race in the 84th district in the Illinois General Assembly.

I have the experience, dedication, and commitment to work across the aisle for the good of all Illinois's citizens. Send me to Springfield!

Maura Hirschauer says she helped eliminate Illinois’ grocery tax. She voted for the bill. That’s a great thing to print on a mailer that only tells half the story.

The state collected the 1% grocery tax, but the money went to local governments. Cities, villages, and counties for sales in unincorporated areas. It wasn’t funding Springfield’s general fund.

When Springfield repealed it, local governments were left to figure out how to replace that revenue or live without it.

Naperville, Batavia, and Elgin enacted their own 1% grocery taxes. Bartlett didn’t, but raised its home-rule sales tax to address several budget needs, including the loss of grocery-tax revenue. West Chicago chose not to implement a replacement tax for 2026.

We had that discussion in Warrenville, too. As an alderman, I was part of it. We chose not to enact a replacement tax. Our residents got the savings, and the city had to absorb the lost revenue.

When Illinois suspended the grocery tax for a year in 2022, the state reimbursed local governments for the lost revenue.

When the permanent repeal took effect in 2026, there was no comparable reimbursement.

I’m all for lowering taxes. But I also serve in local government, where we have to figure out how to pay for the services our residents expect.

Whose budget actually took the hit when someone in Springfield took credit for cutting taxes.

Springfield got the headlines.

Local governments got the bill.
