The DuPage County Recorder's Office recognizes October 8th as National Heroes Day.
This year we highlight Israel Porter Blodgett and his son, Wells Howard Blodgett. Israel's name is found in a ๐ ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ฎ ๐ฅ๐ผ๐น๐น ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฑ book in the DuPage County Recorder's Office.
Israel was an early settler of Downers Grove. He and his wife, Avis, had strong abolitionist convictions, and volunteered their home as a stop on the underground railroad. Several sources documented the couple taking in fugitive slaves traveling to safety. "They hosted up to 15 โfreedom seekersโ in the house at one time, hiding them in their root cellar or attic when the need arose," states the Downers Grove Historical Society.
His son, Wells, received the country's highest award for bravery during combat, the Medal of Honor, for his actions at Newtonia, Missouri, on September 30, 1862. As a first lieutenant, he and a single orderly captured an armed Confederate picket of eight men and brought them in as prisoners. Afterwards he was promoted to colonel.
