Community Consolidated School District 21 CCSD21 is a community of schools dedicated to inspiring curiosity, supporting growth, and celebrating the unique strengths of every learner.

We proudly serve families across six communities and believe in learning that lasts a lifetime. Community Consolidated School District 21 is proud to serve students and families in Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Northbrook, Prospect Heights and Wheeling. From Pre-K through eighth grade, our schools are places where students learn, grow and build connections with the people and communities around them. After eighth grade, our students continue their education at Buffalo Grove High School or Wheeling High School through Township High School District 214, depending on where they live. We’re proud to be part of these communities and to support our students from their earliest school experiences and beyond.

The 2026 Illinois Report Card is here, and we’re proud to celebrate six District 21 schools that earned an Exemplary designation – the highest designation possible!

Congratulations to Cooper, Kilmer, Longfellow, Poe, Riley and Tarkington!

Three additional schools earned Approaching Exemplary designations, the second-highest designation: London, Frost and Whitman.

And three schools earned Commendable designations: Holmes, Field and Twain.

As an early childhood school, Hawthorne is not included in the Illinois Report Card designation system and does not receive a school designation.

This year's report card also marks a redesigned accountability system from the Illinois State Board of Education, incorporating multiple measures of school performance, including student achievement, academic growth, English learner progress, attendance and school climate.

Behind every designation are students putting in the work, educators making a difference and families partnering with our schools. We're proud of all 13 of our school communities and remain committed to our mission to maximize the achievement and honor the uniqueness of every student, every day.

Congratulations to our entire District 21 community!

Building skills. Solving problems. Learning by doing.

Students at Holmes Middle School spent several days last week putting their skills to the test in Project Lead the Way's "Building for the Future" unit!

Working with a single 2x4, students measured, cut and nailed together miniature wall frames featuring three studs sandwiched between a top and bottom plate. With their teacher offering some guidance along the way, Hornets took the lead on planning and construction, figuring out what worked, adjusting their strategies when it didn’t and learning through trial and error.

It's hands-on learning that builds more than walls. Students are developing problem-solving skills, practicing precision and discovering the value of persistence when tackling a real-world challenge.

Big discoveries are growing in the full-day preschool classroom at Whitman Elementary School!

Our youngest learners are kicking off an investigation into plants, exploring nature through hands-on sensory activities and getting ready to create their own nature-inspired art. They also planted beans and will watch them grow in their classroom window, giving them a front-row seat to the wonders of nature!

Through experiences like these, our preschoolers build curiosity, practice observation skills and discover how the world around them grows and changes. We can’t wait to see what sprouts next!

: A lasting impression at Tarkington Elementary School!

One of Tarkington's stairwells is home to a colorful handprint mural that dates back to 1996 – a piece of school history that has been leaving its mark for nearly 30 years!

And here’s the best part: Among the handprints is one belonging to a parent of a current Tarkington fifth grader. Talk about a full-circle moment! What began as a small piece of school life decades ago now connects generations of the Tarkington community.

Some things change over the years, but the connections that make a school special have a way of sticking around.
