Fire Apparatus Struck on Interstate 81

Last night September 21, 2026 just after 10PM, WPFD responded to a multi vehicle crash on interstate 81 at the 5 Mile Marker Southbound.

Engine 24, a 2007 Ferrara Intruder Custom Cab, was positioned behind the original crash site blocking the right shoulder and Lane 2 (Slow Lane) to provide a protective barrier for responders and civilians working at the scene.

At approximately 10:29PM, Engine 24 was struck by a Semi Truck & Trailer transporting additional semi trucks. Following the collision, the semi came to rest against Engine 24. The apparatus sustained significant damage and has been placed out of service indefinitely.
We are extremely thankful to report that no WPFD firefighters were injured. At the time of the collision, our personnel were outside of and away from the apparatus. The positioning of Engine 24 was intentional and was intended to provide protection between approaching traffic and those operating at the original crash scene. The safety of the public and our responders remains our highest priority on every incident. Our department responds frequently to incidents along Interstate 81, and our members understand the significant hazards associated with operating on the interstate.

We hope this incident serves as an important reminder to our fellow responders and departments to remain vigilant while operating on roadways and to utilize effective apparatus positioning and blocking techniques whenever possible.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol responded to the scene and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. Because the investigation remains ongoing, WPFD will not speculate regarding the cause or circumstances of the crash.
