What a ride!

Last month, accessibility advocate Ian Mackay of Ian’s Ride powered his way more than 360 miles along the Erie Canalway Trail, from Albany all the way to Buffalo, in his mouth-controlled power wheelchair.

Ian, a Guinness World Record holder who is paralyzed from the neck down, set out on Sept. 20 and rolled across the finish line on Sept. 28. Along the way, our NYS Canal Corporation team, including Director Ben Walsh, joined him for stretches of the trail, and community members came out to ride along, cheer him on, and swap stories at daily meet-ups.

Ian's journey was a powerful reminder of something we believe in: trails and outdoor spaces should be for EVERYONE. The canal has been connecting New York communities for 200 years, and seeing it bring people together like this was the perfect way to cap off a summer full of inclusion and celebration.

Congrats, Ian, and thanks for letting us be part of the adventure! Keep an eye out for Good Moment, the new documentary about his world-record ride.

Every so often, the Erie Canal gets a visitor that's hard to miss.

A massive 200,000-pound industrial condenser recently made its way across New York, traveling by road from Batavia to Albion, where crews lifted it onto a barge. From there, it floated east along the Erie Canal through Waterford and down the Hudson River, bound for the U.S. Navy in Rhode Island.

Here's the thing: the canal is one of the region's few corridors that can handle oversized, overweight cargo that would be tough, pricey or disruptive to move by road or rail. Industries still count on it for turbines, boilers, aggregate, calcium chloride and other specialized equipment. That means:

🏭 Support for local businesses and manufacturers
đź‘· Jobs in canal communities
🛣️ Less wear and tear on our roads
🌱 A more cost-effective, sustainable way to move goods

As Andy Marzo, our Manager of Strategic Projects, put it: "No other transportation corridor in the region can match the canals' capabilities."

Thinking about going electric? Let's clear the road!

wraps up today, so we're busting some of the most common EV myths before it's over.

How far can an EV really go on one charge? Will I be able to find a charger? What happens when winter hits?

Swipe through to get the facts and see why driving electric might be easier than you think.

Here in New York, our EVolve NY network is expanding fast charging across the state, so you can spend less time worrying and more time enjoying the ride. Learn about EVolve NY and check out our EV trip planner here: evolveny.nypa.gov.

Mentally, we're here.

This , we're taking a moment to recognize something that matters every day: taking care of our minds is just as important as taking care of our bodies.

Sometimes that looks like a walk by the water, a quiet moment among the trees, or just a deep breath at home.

Mental health looks different for everyone, and it's okay to not be okay. The NYS Office of Mental Health offers resources to help New Yorkers support their mental wellness, including coping tips, ways to start a conversation about mental health, and a directory to find mental health programs by county. Learn more at omh.ny.gov.

Check in on yourself. Check in on each other.

Smart Path Connect, our 100-mile transmission modernization project is live, and it represents one of the most significant infrastructure upgrades the state has seen in decades.

Smart Path Connect replaces 70-year-old infrastructure with modern steel transmission towers, enabling up to 1 gigawatt of renewable energy to flow across New York State. That's more clean energy reaching communities and industries that depend on it, all moving through a system built for today's energy demands.

This is the result of years of planning, a strong collaboration with National Grid and coordinated ex*****on across two critical corridors. It's infrastructure that powers New York's clean energy future, and the kind of foundational work that makes the grid more resilient and capable.

Heads up, boaters! As colder weather rolls in, our crews will begin removing docks and buoys along the St. Lawrence River near the St. Lawrence-FDR Power Project starting Oct. 19.

Docks and buoys will be removed in Waddington, Louisville & Massena.

Pulling them out before the freeze keeps our crews safe and protects boats, docks and buoys from winter damage.

We'll let you know when they're back in the water next spring. Thanks for a great season on the river!

As the nation's largest state public power organization, NYPA keeps New York running.

Our clean hydropower and statewide transmission network deliver reliable, affordable electricity to homes, businesses and communities across New York. And we're building what comes next: NYPA is leading the development of at least 1 gigawatt of advanced nuclear energy in Upstate New York, along with workforce training to make sure that future is built by New Yorkers.

Because we're not-for-profit, we put our energy into what matters most: keeping costs down, supporting jobs and strengthening a reliable, emissions-free grid for all New Yorkers.

This , we're proud to stand with more than 2,000 community-owned utilities nationwide that put people first.

Fall colors are coming in across New York State, and some of the best views are right near our facilities.

Here's where to catch the season near us:

🍂 Catskills: Our Blenheim-Gilboa Visitors Center (now closed for renovation, but our next door neighbor Mine Kill State Park is open!) in Schoharie County sits among the hills of the northern Catskills, a scenic stop for a fall drive.

🍂 Central New York: The NYS Canal Corporation System winds through some of the region's prettiest countryside. The canalway trails are a great place to walk, bike or paddle while the leaves turn.

🍂 Adirondacks region: The Champlain Canal runs along the eastern edge of the Adirondacks, with water views framed by fall color.

🍂 Coming soon: As the season moves west and north, keep an eye on Niagara Power Vista in Lewiston and our St. Lawrence-FDR Visitors Center in Massena.

I LOVE NEW YORK volunteers update the report every Wednesday afternoon, so check back to plan your weekend around peak color. Share your fall photos with us! 📸

A career full of firsts. A legacy built around community.
Some people make history once. Bethaida “Bea” Gonzalez has decided once wasn’t enough.
NYPA Trustee Bethaida “Bea” González is being recognized at the New York State Capitol as part of the 2026 exhibit, “Unidos, Somos Más. Together, We Are More.”
Bea has spent decades opening doors for others. In 1991, she became the first Hispanic person elected to a citywide position in Syracuse through her election to the City School Board. Ten years later, she became the first Latina president of the Syracuse Common Council.
Her commitment to service also runs deep. Over 36 years at Syracuse University, she worked to expand opportunities for first generation students, continuing a family tradition of community service started by her parents, who co-founded La Liga : The Spanish Action League of Onondaga County Inc.
Today, she brings that same commitment to public service to her work as a NYPA Trustee.
The exhibit is on view in the Governor's Reception Room at the New York State Capitol, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., through October 15. If you're in Albany, stop by and learn about the New Yorkers making a difference.
Felicidades, Bea!
