University of Montana’s State of Mind project will visit White Sulphur Springs on September 29 and 30, bringing free workshops for students and adults, an interactive theatre performance, and a community coffee conversation focused on strengthening mental wellness in rural Montana.
Developed by UM’s Co Lab for Civic Imagination and Montana Repertory Theatre, State of Mind uses storytelling and conversation to help communities talk more openly about mental and behavioral health. The program has already visited more than 30 Montana towns, partnering with local schools, health workers, law enforcement, churches, and civic groups.
Montana continues to face serious mental health challenges. More than 35% of adults report symptoms of anxiety or depression, and our state ranks among the top five nationwide for su***de rates. In rural areas, it can be hard to find counselors or specialists when someone is struggling. State of Mind aims to help communities build stronger connections and clearer pathways to care.
Program director Michael Rohd says, “The arts are a powerful way to not just share stories, but to gather and imagine the futures we want to see and build together. State of Mind’s goals include tackling stigmas around seeking help, making local resources more visible, and contributing to local capacity for community care.”
