As a 'city leader', while there are a multitude of things to consider, there is also the impacts our decisions have, not only on Whitehall itself but on the planet and its future. I don't have children so one could say what happens won't be TO me but, I share this planet and my say in its future affects everyone else, particularly all those fellow humans who will have to abide the decisions I and others, big and small, make today. That is why I take my small role in a small town so seriously. Every ripple matters and so, when I speak out against things the status quo/majority want, it is for this larger picture reason. The collective irresponsibility of leaders only focused on what is good for THEM or immediate 'success' will cause this devastating collapse. They refuse to see and take a stand for the bigger picture that will affect THEIR children and grandchildren, focused solely on what they see as best 'right now'. If we don't/can't/won't get past this myopic self-centeredness, there will come a reckoning for us all.

Just a reminder to Ward One residents and the rest of the Whitehall community, this is coming up tomorrow at the Barnett Recreation Center, 4:30-7:30. Sometimes the smartest environmental solutions are surprisingly simple.

These mesh traps sit at stormwater outlets and catch bottles, plastic packaging, cans, branches and other debris carried through city drains after rain. Water continues through the mesh while larger waste stays trapped instead of being carried farther downstream.

The original two traps captured about 370 kilograms of debris, proving how much rubbish can move through stormwater systems without most people ever seeing it.

The idea was successful enough that the system was expanded. With five drainage nets operating, they have intercepted more than 3.6 tonnes of waste and debris across dozens of cleanouts.

Their biggest advantage is catching pollution early. Once plastic reaches rivers and oceans, currents can scatter it across huge distances and sunlight and waves can gradually break it into smaller pieces that become much harder to remove.

Here, workers can simply lift the filled nets, empty them, separate recyclable material and put the traps back into service.

No complicated machinery. No futuristic technology. Just a reusable barrier placed exactly where pollution is trying to escape.

Sometimes a big environmental problem really can have a beautifully simple solution.

The 1.5 C line everyone spent a decade promising to hold is already behind us.

The UN isn't hedging anymore. Global warming is guaranteed to exceed that limit and stay above it for "many, many decades."

That's not a forecast. It's a settled fact.

Every climate summit since Paris was built around that one number. The pledges, the photo ops, the countdown clocks. All of it pointed at a threshold we've now blown through with no realistic road back this century.

So the question quietly changed while nobody announced it. It stopped being how do we stop this and became how much worse do we let it get.

The worst impacts aren't coming. They're already booked.
