π MORE THAN A CLASSROOM: Opportunities at LCPS π
π School Spotlight: West Whitesburg Elementary β STLP
At West Whitesburg Elementary, students are putting their creativity, technology skills, and problem-solving abilities to work through the Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP)!
Through the Robotics Team and School Garden Project, students are gaining hands-on experience in coding, engineering, environmental science, and teamworkβall while making a difference in their school and community.
π€ Robotics Team: Students design, build, and code robots to tackle challenges, strengthen critical thinking skills, and compete in regional events.
π± School Garden Project: Students use technology and science to monitor soil conditions, track plant growth, explore irrigation solutions, and grow their knowledge beyond the classroom.
And their learning doesn't stop at WWE! Students have partnered with ARH Hospital to help create a garden, participated in innovation fairs and regional competitions, and shared their projects at the University of the Cumberlands' 2026 Vibrant Learning professional development event.
π¬ Hear from our students!
"Being in STLP makes me feel like a real engineer and scientist. I love coding our robot to solve challenges." β Owen Blair, 4th Grade
"Building and growing our school garden has shown me how science actually works in real life!" β Jamie Perkins, 4th Grade
π¬ Coach Melissa Strand shares:
"STLP gives our students a platform to step out of the traditional classroom routines and take true ownership of their learning. Watching them collaborate, debug a line of code, or use data to improve our school garden builds a level of confidence and career readiness that stays with them forever."
From coding robots to growing gardens, WWE students are demonstrating what it means to be Proficient Problem Solvers, a key part of our LCPS Portrait of a Learner!
