Thank you Stacey, Seth, Karson, Kay, Suzie, Savannah, Christina, Lacie & Wanda for sharing the history of downtown Whitley City. Our stops included the historic Wagon Wheel, now famously known as the Dairy Bar, Albert Hickman & the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home, the Ridge Crest Hotel, Bank of McCreary County, O.O. Duncan, Simon Webb of Webb's Hardware (now Scooby Doo's), the lost cornerstone-The Star Hotel, Patton's Appliance & the Whitley City Theater, the resilient seats of justice & the devastating fires of 1927 & 1953, the hand-cut native sandstone used by WPA on the 1935 Whitley City Elementary & many more.
While historical records help us establish names, dates & events, it's often the personal stories that truly bring our communities past to life. Stories were told & memories were shared. Historic downtown Whitley City is about more than the buildings, it's about the people who lived here, the businesses they built, the families they raised & the community they helped shape. Thank you Heartbeat of McCreary County for capturing our historic walk. 📸

Students at Whitley City Elementary stepped back to the late 1800's to learn all about the famous French artist, Henri Matisse. Matisse is known for his bright colors & joyful paper cut-outs. Some of his most famous works include Portrait of Lydia Delectorskaya, Icarus & The Snail. Students then recreated their own versions of the iconic artwork.
Another cool fact about Matisse...his best friend was Pablo Picasso.

Building Bridges, Making Memories, and Celebrating KEHA Week!

What better way to celebrate Kentucky Extension Homemakers Association (KEHA) Week than with a day of exploring Kentucky’s history, strengthening friendships, and connecting with fellow Homemakers!

McCreary County Extension Homemakers joined our friends from Wayne County for a memorable covered bridge tour, visiting six of Kentucky’s historic treasures: Walcott, Dover, Cabin Creek, Goddard, Ringo’s Mill, and Grange Covered Bridges.

Along the way, participants shared interesting facts and stories about the bridges, enjoyed beautiful fall scenery, and even made a few unexpected discoveries! We also enjoyed a special stop at Watson’s Grocery and spotted the lasting contributions of fellow Kentucky Homemakers at several of our destinations.

But the best part of the day wasn’t just the bridges we crossed — it was the friendships we strengthened, the connections we made, and the memories we created together.

A special thank-you to our Wayne County Extension Homemakers for joining us and to everyone who helped make this trip possible!

KEHA is about so much more than meetings. It’s about lifelong learning, leadership, service, friendship, and building stronger communities. We’re proud to celebrate the impact of Extension Homemakers across Kentucky!

Interested in becoming an Extension Homemaker? We’d love to welcome you! Contact the McCreary County Extension Office at 606-376-2524 to learn more.

🎯🍔 That's a WRAP on our 2026 4-H Shooting Sports Season! 🍀🏹

What a wonderful way to close out another great season! Tonight, our McCreary County 4-H Shooting Sports Club gathered for a BBQ potluck, good food, lots of laughs, and a celebration of our amazing youth!

We proudly recognized our members for their hard work and accomplishments, presenting awards and patches earned at the Kentucky State 4-H 🍀 Shooting Sports Competition! 🏅

We also took a special moment to recognize our incredible volunteer coaches with a small token of appreciation. These coaches give so much of their time, patience, knowledge, and encouragement to help our youth grow, not just as shooters, but as confident, responsible young people. Their dedication does not go unnoticed, and we are so thankful for each of them! ❤️

To our 4-H families, volunteers, and supporters, THANK YOU for making this season possible. And to our young shooters, we couldn't be prouder of your growth, determination, and sportsmanship!

🍀 Here's to another season of aiming high, making memories, and hitting our targets, both on and off the range! 🎯

See you in 2027! 💚
