A Kansas Open Record Act request I filed over one month ago has been delayed yet again. I have requested a list of all tax exempt real estate properties in Sedgwick County. Now after paying a fee last Friday, I am being told it will take another two weeks for IT to create. Bear with me as I wait - there are over 6,000 properties not paying taxes. And somehow this list has NEVER been created before. These waived property tax revenues impact schools, city and county budgets. But residential homeowners, like you and me keep paying higher property taxes because we didn’t get perks like IRBs. And there has been limited oversight and negligible accountability on jobs and revenue promises by economic development.

If you’ve never heard the Wichita Wurlitzer perform, this is an important celebration on October 22, Thursday night, Exhibition Hall in Century II tickets on sale at the door or at https://selectaseat.com/Wurlitzer - complete with cake and Brett Valliant at the key board. This is an extremely rare working Wurlitzer (there only 5 left in use) and other states have tried to take it. Wichita, turn out and listen. Historic events such as these, deserve a historic turnout. Chase Koch is from a local billionaire family. He wants tax incentives for his music district? No way. Here’s my response to him and city council. Tax incentives are to be used for projects where there is a gap from lenders, a ‘but for’ situation. In the words of Paul Jackson Vantage Point Properties, city leaders shouldn’t give out incentives ‘like candy’, but to support projects that need them to be viable. Even Chung, Project Wichita, couldn’t understand why Wichita didn’t receive more philanthropic funds from the millionaire/billionaires living here. So Chase, fund this on your own. It’s time to give back. Warren Buffet does it for Omaha. You and your family can do it for Wichita. Wichita taxpayers, schools, and the city would appreciate it! BE GENEROUS. CREATE A LEGACY.

City Council January 20, 2026: Mayor Wu asked Gary Janzen why city council was not told back in September 17, 2024, that liquidated damages were being forgiven when they approved 2 change orders for the water plant. His answer, “that’s on me.” Basically (in his opinion) recovering costs in the claim process after the plant goes live (which is supposed to happen in 2027) will be more effective. Too bad this wasn’t part of the discussion BEFORE they voted in 2024. Gary has worked too closely with Ron, Wichita Water Partners, and was part of the free steak dinners when bidding was changed under former Mayor Jeff Longwell. This fact alone should require greater scrutiny of Janzen decisions. Taxpayers would have appreciated this transparency too.

Wichita Eagle reporter Chance Swaim summarizes the timeline of changes to the $575,000,000 Water Plant. My Kansas Open Records Act request (KORA) to get the most recent Performance Testing Analysis was DENIED. There is no transparency if we taxpayers can’t see what the tests show. City council voted to eliminate $5 Million in penalties at city council meeting September 17, 2024 - only JV Johnston voted no. Wichita graft ‘Pay to play’ has cost us millions.

500,000 customers impacted.
Only KDHE can say when water is okay.

Why are we taking on operating and security costs for an unfinished and inoperable water plant? KDHE isn’t going to approve until 2027. Warranties end in April. No penalties?
