Hello Pioneers! 👋

When students return to school on Monday, October 19, West High will renew its focus on following our school rules for cell phones and other personal electronic devices.

Kansas law and WPS BOE policy require students to keep these devices turned off and stored away during the school day.

As a reminder:

👉 No personal electronic devices during the school day. West's building procedures also apply to school-sponsored activities on and off campus, including field trips, from 7:40am to 3:10pm.

👉 Devices must be turned off and stored in the designated location. Each student at West was checked out a locker where devices can be stored. Devices cannot be on a student's person or readily accessible. This includes pants and hoodie pockets.

👉 If a student is seen with a device, they must turn it in at the office where it will be stored safely and can be retrieved between 3:10pm and 4pm.

👉 The policy covers more than phones. Smartwatches, personal tablets, wireless earbuds and similar devices are included.

👉 Approved exceptions apply. Students with qualifying IEP, Section 504 or medical accommodations have a sticker on their student ID indicating approved device use.

👉 On the third violation, a parent or guardian must pick up the device from school.

Parents - if you need to reach your student please call West High at 316-973-3600.

Students - if you need to contact home please ask a staff member to help you use a school phone.

Thank you for helping us make West a place where every student can focus, learn and succeed.

West is Best! 💛

What is a bond?

• A bond is similar to how a family might take out a mortgage to buy or renovate a home. A bond is how school districts in Kansas pay for major building and facility projects, as the district’s capital budget is intended to cover smaller repairs and predictive and preventative maintenance.

• In Kansas, a school bond must be approved by voters. If approved, the district repays the bond over time using local property taxes.

• A bond is used for long-term investments in buildings and infrastructure. It can’t be used for day-to-day school expenses such as paying teacher salaries or other operational expenses.

---

The WPS bond issue is divided into two questions. Voters have the option to choose Question 1, or Question 1 AND Question 2. Question 1 has to pass for Question 2 to pass.

📌 If Question 1 passes, the tax rate would remain the same. A homeowner would not see an increase to what they currently pay, unless their property valuation increases.

📌 If Question 2 passes, the tax rate would increase with an anticipated impact of an additional $50 a year ($4.16 a month) for the owner of a $200,000 home compared to what is being paid today.

The district recommended a bond referendum based on school and community feedback.

---

💼 Pioneer Leaders Have Been on the Move!

West High DECA students took their learning beyond the classroom last week at the Fall Leadership Conference at Wichita State University!

These Pioneers spent the day:
• Building leadership skills
• Learning tips and strategies for DECA competitions
• Hearing from guest speakers
• Networking with DECA students from across Kansas

DECA helps students build real-world skills for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. And opportunities like this help them grow their confidence, make connections and explore what's possible for their futures!

HUGE shoutout to our students and DECA sponsor Ms. Herter for representing West! 💛

🗳️ A little civic engagement with lunch? Yes, please!

A HUGE thank you to the League of Women Voters of Wichita Metro for spending time with our Pioneers at West High!

Students had the chance to learn about the importance of civic engagement, voting and making their voices heard in our community. The League also helped eligible seniors who were interested register to vote.

We love seeing our community partners bring real-world learning opportunities right to our students.

Special shoutout to Mrs. Gonzalez for making it all happen! Thank you for bringing this opportunity to West! 💛
