Happy Bosses Day!

Today we're taking a moment to recognize the supervisors across our office who bring integrity, dedication, and heart to everything they do. From the attorneys who guide our trial teams to the professional staff supervisors who keep every division running smoothly, these individuals set the standard for the work we do on behalf of our community each day.

Pursuing justice and supporting victims is demanding work, and strong leadership makes all the difference. Our supervisors mentor new team members, step in when cases get complicated, share their experience generously, and remind us why this work matters. Their steady guidance helps every member of our team serve the public with professionalism and care.

The photos below feature just a few of the many outstanding supervisors in our office. To each of them, pictured or not: thank you for your commitment, your example, and the support you give your teams every day. We are grateful for you!

District Attorney Bennett recently spent time with members of Ridgepoint Church talking about how to recognize and avoid scams. Fraudsters are constantly changing their tactics, whether through phone calls, text messages, emails, or social media, and they often target the people we care about most. Spending time with our neighbors and sharing practical information is one of the most meaningful ways our office can help keep this community safe.

We're grateful to Ridgepoint for opening their doors and to everyone who came out.

Would your church, civic group, school, or organization like a speaker? Our office is happy to visit and talk about scam prevention and other public safety topics. Contact our Public Information Officer at [email protected] to schedule a presentation.

Welcome back, Hunter!

We are thrilled to welcome Assistant District Attorney Hunter Johnson back to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office!

Hunter was sworn in today by Judge Sean Hatfield, marking his return to our office. Congratulations, Hunter, and welcome home!

Today we had the honor of celebrating five members of our District Attorney's Office team who received Sedgwick County Values Awards at the annual Employee Recognition Ceremony.

Congratulations to Emily Carlton, Jennifer Jameson, Mandi McCurdy, Rita Moore, and Misty Peterson! Each of these employees was recognized for the way they live out the County's values in their daily work, whether that means supporting victims and families through some of the hardest moments of their lives, strengthening the cases we bring to court, or keeping our office running so that justice can be served efficiently and fairly.

We are grateful for their dedication and proud to see their contributions recognized. Days like today are also a reminder of the commitment shown by every member of our office throughout the year. The work of public safety depends on people who show up with integrity and care, often behind the scenes, and we are thankful for each of them.

Congratulations again to our award recipients, and thank you to Sedgwick County for the opportunity to celebrate our employees.

This week, prosecutors from the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office joined colleagues from across the state at the Kansas County and District Attorneys Association (KCDAA) fall conference. We were especially glad to be there alongside former and retired members of our office, many of whom helped shape the work we continue today.

Prosecution is never the work of one person. Every case depends on attorneys, investigators, victim advocates, and professional staff working together, and on the foundation built by those who served before us. Many of the standards and relationships our office relies on were established by prosecutors who gave years, and in some cases decades, to this community.

To our current team, thank you for the work you do every day. To those who came before us, thank you for your service and for continuing to invest in this profession. Sedgwick County is better served because of your commitment.

Congratulations to District Attorney Marc Bennett, who was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kansas County and District Attorneys Association (KCDAA) at their 2026 fall conference today.

The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes Kansas prosecutors who have dedicated at least 25 years of their careers to serving as a prosecutor. DA Bennett joined the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office in 1997 and has served as District Attorney since 2012. That’s nearly three decades of service to this community.

Please join us in congratulating DA Bennett on this well-deserved honor.

Wichita man convicted in 2019 death of 2-year-old boy

WICHITA, Kan. – A Sedgwick County jury on Wednesday found a Wichita man guilty as charged in the 2019 death of a 2-year-old boy who had been left in his care.

Bernardo Gonzalez-Mejia, 38, was convicted of Murder in the First Degree, Abuse of a Child, and Aggravated Endangering of a Child. Jurors returned the verdict after approximately 3 hours of deliberation following a 7-day trial before District Judge Eric Williams

On Sept. 29, 2019, Wichita police officers and emergency medical crews responded to a report of a child who was not breathing at a home in Wichita. Jacob Aviles, 2, was pronounced dead at the scene. Gonzalez-Mejia, who was then the boyfriend of the child's mother, was caring for Jacob at the time.

The child's mother, Stephanie Aviles, was convicted by a jury in July 2025 of first-degree murder and related charges in Jacob's death. She was sentenced in September 2025 to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years, plus an additional 41 months.

Sentencing for Gonzalez-Mejia is scheduled for December 14 before Judge Williams. The defendant remains in custody pending sentencing.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Alice Osburn and Assistant District Attorney Atticus Disney prosecuted the case. The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office wishes to thank Wichita Police Department Detective Addie Perkins for her commitment to the case over the past seven years.

🎃 Help Us Support Kansas Kids This Halloween Season 🎃

The Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office is proud to support Children's Advocacy Centers of Kansas and their Candy Awareness Campaign, and we're inviting our community to join us!

Children's Advocacy Centers (CACs) provide a safe, child-friendly place where children who have experienced abuse can share their story with trained professionals and connect with the support they need to heal. Across Kansas, CACs work alongside law enforcement, prosecutors, medical providers, and advocates so that every child is met with compassion and care. Our office sees the difference this work makes, and we are grateful for the partners who make it possible.

Here's how you can help: drop off individually wrapped, store-bought candy at one of our two offices during business hours, now through Thursday, October 15. We are also working with local businesses to host collection sites, and we'll share those locations soon. If your business would like to serve as a drop-off point, please send us a message!

Every piece of candy helps start a conversation about keeping kids safe. Thank you for helping us show Kansas children that their community stands with them. 💜
