Happy Saturday neighbors!

It is nearly the end of the gardening season and we’d like to share what may be the final harvest of the year!

At the little free library/sharing station, you will find Swiss chard, eggplant and both serano and small jalepeno peppers for you to enjoy.

Behind the coolers is some African Milk Tree cactus. It is spiky, so be careful!

The herb garden is looking beautiful. Temperatures are forecast to dip into the 30s by the end of the week, so please harvest what you are interested in drying. There are scissors to use on the east side of the herb garden.

Enjoy these beautiful days! Our neighborhood is the best during the Fall.

We would love to have you join us for our last Coffee and Dirt of the season this Saturday, October 10, at 9:00 a.m. We will have coffee and breakfast treats available. Todd Volkmann (Director of the Kansas Wildlife Exhibit) will bring an animal ambassador with him. You don't want to miss this opportunity to have some up-close and personal time with Todd.

Our partnership with KWE is one of our favorite neighborhood endeavors. We grow sweet potatoes (and their vines) to feed Chapa the beaver, helped plant native pollinator beds around the exhibit and volunteer to man games at Owloween.

We'll spend time harvesting sweet potatoes, weeding, laying cardboard and spreading a little mulch (and perhaps other assorted Fall tasks) after Todd is finished.

You can find us at 802 Amidon, the corner of Amidon and Murdock in the Riverside neighborhood.

Yesterday's gathering at the garden was delightful--a lovely group of people and Mark is one of our favorite speakers! Thanks to Russell Fox's sustainability class for joining us to chat about ICT Food Rescue and Riverside Garden after the program.

Mark mentioned Doug Tallamy's work and the site Home Grown National Park. You'll find a link in the comments, if you'd like to look.

You don’t need a large space or special expertise to make a difference for our birds and insects. Landscaping, part of a garden bed, or even a small planting area can support meaningful life. When we all take action, these spaces begin to connect, creating networks of habitat across neighborhoods and communities. This is how we make a difference.

Sunday if you have the opportunity to drive to Hesston, Dyck Arboretum of the Plains is ending their FloraKansas Native Plant sale. You can find some keystone native plants, and again at their annual sale in April.

And finally, If you have space to plant and care for a tree on your property, the city of Wichita has a generous rebate program (info also in the comments). Oak trees are a keystone plant, and would be a great option for both birds and insects.

We'd love for you to join us for our September Coffee & Dirt, a presentation on Birds of Riverside and the Plants They Love, featuring our favorite bird enthusiast/neighbor/gardener Mark Nolen. We'll have seeds for you to take home, and an oriole bird feeder to give away.

As always, we'll have coffee and breakfast items and fresh produce to share.

Join us Saturday morning at Riverside Garden on the corner of Murdock and Amidon.

Saturday has so many good options of things to do while escaping the heat, right in our neighborhood!

Start your day with us at Mid-America All-Indian Museum for Bee Fest 2026 (10 am - 1 pm). We'll have herb seeds for pollinators to share and will show off our interactive herb map.

Botanica's Monarch Fest is also Saturday. 9 am - 5 pm) Enjoy the beautiful origami sculpture exhibit and a myriad of activities. Our neighbor Ryan Malone has a presentation you won't want to miss at 12:30. Regular garden admission.

The Herb society will be selling herbs at Botanica during Monarch Fest. If you caught Lisa's presentation during our last coffee and dirt, this is your chance to expand your perennial herb garden.

Riverside Garden is excited to join the Bee City Wichita Coalition for ICT Bee Fest on September 5, beginning at 10 am.

This free event at Mid America All Indian Museum will include monarch tagging demonstrations, bumble bee petting zoo and a keynote address (at 11 am) on native bee diversity, as well as local vendors and artists. We're emphasizing herbs for pollinators and we have seeds for you to take home again this year.
