Hello Wiggins,
We understand how frustrating it is that the fall baseball season was canceled. Parents registered their kids expecting the season to happen, and it’s disappointing to see it canceled after families have already made plans. But the numbers don't support teams and games happening only in town. We had only 20 children signed up across the three age groups: 3-4 year olds, 5-6 year olds, and 7-8 year olds. Baseball would not combine well because the 3-4-year-olds are T-ball aged, the 5-6-year-olds are coach pitch, and the 7-8-year-olds are kid pitch. Having a 5-year-old play against an 8-year-old would not be appropriate.
We had the same problem with participation numbers and soccer, and before canceling an entire season, we looked at alternatives and decided to combine age groups. We now have seven teams identified, but only three coaches have volunteered. Unless we have more volunteer coaches step up, the soccer season may also be canceled. If we get enough coaches, we will consider moving any child who wanted to play baseball to a soccer team.
Basketball is the same; the Town doesn't have enough participants to support a standalone league, so we coordinate with the Northern Valley Athletic Association (NVAA), as several other towns do.
Parks and Recreation programs in small towns are a struggle, not just in Wiggins. Of approximately 140 towns with a population of 2,000 or less, only about six have a dedicated Parks and Recreation department, Wiggins included. Another 14 towns have municipal recreation programs, leaving almost 120 towns that combine with other municipal and regional recreation programs. We may need to combine more with regional recreation programs in certain sports to continue offering these programs to our children.
Since 2022, we have had five different Parks and Recreation Coordinators, all of whom were part-time and left the program voluntarily, mainly for personal/family reasons. During the same period, multiple sports seasons were faced with cancellation due to a lack of volunteer coaches; this is not a new problem. In January 2026, we advertised for a full-time Parks and Recreation Coordinator and got two applications. One person was from Akron, and one person was from Wiggins. While they may not have been the most qualified, they were the only ones who stepped up and tried to make a difference.
The last thing we want is to cancel sports seasons; we want the program to succeed, but we will need your help to make it happen. If you want to volunteer to coach or help our Parks and Recreation program in any way, please let us know by calling 970-483-6161 or emailing us. We have a new email address that is monitored by multiple people at [email protected]
We hope we can count on you to help us find solutions that work for our program and our kids!
