As temperatures rise and summer activities begin, the Wilkes-Barre City Fire Department would like to remind everyone to stay safe and make smart choices while enjoying the season.

🔥 Grill Safely – Keep grills away from homes, decks, and anything combustible. Never leave a grill unattended.

🏊 Water Safety Matters – Always supervise children around pools, lakes, and water activities. Wear life jackets when appropriate.

🌡️ Beat the Heat – Stay hydrated, limit prolonged sun exposure, and check on elderly family members and neighbors during hot weather.

🚲 Helmet Up – Whether biking, skating, or riding scooters, always wear proper protective equipment.

🎆 Fireworks Safety – Leave fireworks to the professionals. Illegal or improper use can lead to serious injuries and fires.

🚗 Look Before You Lock – Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle, even for a short time.

Have a safe, fun, and enjoyable summer! Stay alert, stay prepared, and take care of one another. 🚒☀️

Deputy Chief Alan Klapat and Captain Robert Stehle participated in the Junior Achievement YES! Program at GAR Memorial Middle School.

YES! (Your Economic Success) is a Junior Achievement program for middle school students that uses hands-on activities to teach financial literacy, career readiness, and entrepreneurship skills.

YES! is designed to help students understand how their education, career choices, and financial decisions will shape their futures as young adults. It emphasizes financial literacy, work and career readiness, and entrepreneurship through interactive, real-world learning

Congratulations to Paramedic Carrie MacCollum and Firefighter/EMT Kevin Mann on receiving the Exceptional Trauma Care Award from Geisinger Wyoming Valley.

Carrie and Kevin were recognized for their outstanding application of ATLS assessment and treatment in the care of a critically injured patient involved in a motor vehicle incident. Their professionalism, clinical skill, and commitment to providing exceptional patient care reflect the highest standards of emergency medical service.

We extend our sincere congratulations to Carrie and Kevin, as well as all of the regional EMS providers honored with awards today. Your dedication and lifesaving efforts make a difference in our community every day.

Wilkes-Barre City Mayor George C. Brown is happy to recognize Emergency Medical Services Week, May 17-23, 2026. The theme of this year’s nationally celebrated week is “Improving Outcomes, Together". To recognize EMS week, Mayor Brown presented a proclamation to Fire Chief Jay Delaney and members of the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department.

The Mayor’s proclamation noted that “Emergency Medical Services is a vital public service. The members of the Wilkes-Barre City Fire Department Emergency Medical Service are ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Emergency Medical Services system consists of first responders, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, emergency medical dispatchers, firefighters, police officers, educators, administrators, pre-hospital nurses, emergency nurses, emergency physicians, trained members of the public, and other out of hospital medica care providers. It is appropriate to recognize the value and the accomplishments of emergency medical service providers by designating Emergency Medical Services Week.”
Upon receiving the proclamation, Chief Delaney stated, “for over 50 years the Wilkes-Barre City Fire Department has been providing quality Advance Life Support Emergency Medical Service. Our Fire Fighter/EMTs and Paramedics provide exceptional service to the residents and visitors to the City of Wilkes-Barre, answering over 8,000 calls per year.
