Last week Wilkes-Barre City Mayor George C. Brown and representatives from the Wilkes-Barre Police and Fire Departments visited Wilkes-Barre Area High School for assemblies with 9th through 12th grade students.
Mayor Brown spoke to the students about his responsibilities as Mayor and the importance of first responders. Police Chief Mike Boyle and Fire Chief Jay Delaney took questions from students about their responsibilities and career highlights before introducing members of their respective departments.
Sergeant Steve Lada and Officer James Verdekal showcased the e-bikes used for the WBPD’s bike patrol unit and spoke about their careers in law enforcement. As in all school visits during this past school year, the high school students were most enthusiastic about Police Officer Rich Olshefski and his K9 partner Tenshi teamwork demonstration.
WBFD Captain Robert Stehle and Firefighter Candice Hartman presented how quickly firefighters get into their turnout gear, as physically demonstrated by Firefighter Michael Meeker, and components of the fire turnout gear and attached equipment. Mayor Brown and representatives from both police and fire departments took questions from the students at the end of the presentation.

The 2nd Annual “Walk the Walk” for Instruction was a celebration of the collective impact we make every day for our students. As we walked side by side, we honored the teachers, instructional coaches, literacy leaders, administrators, and support staff who inspire, support, and strengthen learning across our district. Every role matters. Every effort matters. Together, we continue to make a difference for each and every student.

Part of our team culture is service to our community. Every year our boys volunteer at the Osterhout Library in Wilkes Barre. Here is our first group ready for the morning shift helping set up the book tent sale! We will have shifts of boys throughout the entire sale helping the library in this important fund raiser. Be sure to stop by and say hello and pick up a few books! Thanks Jake, Jacob, Ayman, and Josh for volunteering.

As part of our America 250 celebration, Solomon Elementary students created artistic American flags using a variety of recycled materials!
From cardboard, paper, plastic, and other repurposed items, students transformed everyday materials into unique works of art. Their projects showcased creativity, patriotism, and environmental responsibility while celebrating the history and symbolism of the American flag.
We are proud of the imagination, effort, and Wolfpack spirit displayed in each creation. These flags are a wonderful reminder that great things can be made from recycled materials when creativity takes the lead!
Great job, Solomon Elementary Wolfpack! 🐺❤️🤍💙
