Victims Resource Center Provides services for victims of sexual assault and other crimes. VRC has the right to remove any inappropriate comments.

In 1974, a nationwide rape crisis movement brought awareness of victims' rights to the forefront. A grassroots organization called the Luzerne County Women Organized Against Rape opened it's doors, providing a 24-hour hotline and accompaniment to police interviews, hospital visits, and court proceedings. This was the genesis of the Victims Resource Center (VRC) that today provides assistance to victims of all types of crimes. In 1979, an office was established in Wilkes-Barre with two staff members. In 1982, the organization's name was changed to Victims Resource Center. VRC continues to broaden it's scope of services, and has opened additional offices in Jim Thorpe, Tunkhannock, and Conyngham.

We’re celebrating an important step forward for survivors!

HB 2474 and SB 1212 passed Pennsylvania’s legislature with unanimous support and now await the governor’s signature.
*
Children deserve adults who recognize harm and act to protect them. That includes responding to child sexual abuse material (CSAM), the unlawful sharing of intimate images and hazing.
*
Survivors waiting for their r**e kits to be tested deserve to know their evidence is being taken seriously. The passage of these bills brings Pennsylvania closer to meeting those responsibilities with the urgency, care and accountability survivors deserve.

VRC would like to give special thanks to Senator Lisa Baker for helping move these important protections forward and supporting children and survivors in Luzerne and Wyoming Counties. Your work makes a difference for the people we serve.

Someone can keep showing up at work, making plans, and caring for others while experiencing abuse.

This is a reminder to pay attention with care. Domestic violence can affect people of any gender, and knowing someone well does not mean we know everything happening in their life.
**
If someone chooses to tell you, listen without asking them to prove it. A calm response can be: “I believe you. How can I support you?”
**
Share information about local help when it is safe and welcome.

A relationship can feel unsafe because of threats, control or isolation, even when there are no visible injuries. Responsibility belongs to the person choosing those behaviors.
**
You are allowed to ask questions about what you are experiencing. An advocate can help you explore your options without deciding for you.

Domestic violence affects individuals, families, and communities. And creating meaningful change requires more than awareness. It takes compassion, education, advocacy, and a shared commitment to ensuring survivors have somewhere to turn.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, VRC was honored to join the Wyoming County Commissioners for an official proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
*
This proclamation is more than a symbolic gesture. It's a public acknowledgment that domestic violence deserves our attention, that survivors deserve to be heard and supported, and that every member of our community has a role to play in creating a safer future.
*
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Wyoming County Commissioners for standing alongside VRC and helping bring visibility to an issue that too often remains hidden behind closed doors.

Today, our communities showed up in PURPLE, and we couldn’t be more grateful! From local businesses and libraries to law enforcement, community leaders, and our very own VRC team, people throughout Luzerne, Wyoming, and Carbon Counties are coming together for Purple Thursday in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

And while the purple shirts, ribbons, and displays certainly caught our attention, it’s the message behind them that matters most.

To survivors of domestic violence — Your community sees you. Your community supports you. And you are not alone.
Every person who wore purple today helped make an often-hidden issue more visible. Every conversation sparked by a purple ribbon is an opportunity to raise awareness, share resources, and remind someone that help is available.
