This year’s Trunk or Treat theme is Toy Story, with a little Halloween terror mixed in. 👻 And the more we thought about it, the more we realized it fits our team pretty well.

Much like the toys, our telecommunicators are always there, even though most people never see them doing their work. They come from different backgrounds, with different experiences, strengths and personalities. Anyone who has spent time in a 911 center knows there is certainly no shortage of those!

No two are the same. But when the phone rings, there’s a mission to complete.

In spite of the terror, uncertainty or chaos on the other end of the line, they come together. Someone answers the call, someone gets help moving and someone is always there to help the person beside them.

Different people. Different roles. One team. One mission.

And that’s really what our Trunk or Treat is about too.

Police, fire and EMS agencies, County departments, community partners, vendors and our DES team all bring something different to the toy box. But we come together with one mission: doing something good for our community.

And there’s one very important piece we can’t do it without.

You.

Last year, approximately 2,000 trick or treaters and more than 50 trunks joined us. We hope you’ll join us this year!

"Our Fire Station, Your Way” event at the Kingston Forty-Fort Fire Department.

Several members of Luzerne County's Administration and Emergency Management staff recently joined fire department staff, along with Rep. Brenda Pugh and Senator Lisa Baker, to teach children, especially those with autism and intellectual disabilities, how to respond during a fire emergency.

This is one of just a few events planned for Fire Prevention Month this October.

4 weeks until Election Day!

Mail-In Ballots have gone out for Luzerne County voters who submitted requests for the 2026 General Election. Here’s what you need to know to ensure your ballot gets counted.

1. Fill in the box to the left of your choices using a black pen (preferred).
2. Seal your completed mail-in ballot inside the Yellow Secrecy Envelope.
3. Seal the Yellow Secrecy Envelope inside your White and Purple Return Envelope.
4. Sign and put the date when you sign in the boxes on the back of the Return Envelope.
5. Return your ballot to the Bureau of Elections office by 8:00PM on Election Day (November 3, 2026).

Luzerne County legislators meet with Human Services officials to talk about services available for county residents.

The topics included the various services offered from our County Human Services Offices, including Area Agency on Aging, Children, Youth and Families, Drug and Alcohol, Office of Human Services, Mental Health/Developmental Services as well as Veterans Affairs. We spoke about challenges and highlighted the successes in each Department.

The legislators also received some information about the work our Flood Protection Authority does for our community.

Today, near the main softball field at Kirby Park, a new Babe Ruth historical marker was unveiled which commemorates the 650-ft. home run that Ruth hit, at that spot, in October of 1926. The marker was erected through a joint effort by Visit Luzerne County, the City of Wilkes-Barre, The Luzerne Foundation and the Luzerne County Sports Hall of Fame. One local man’s experience with recovery turned into a mission of establishing a recovery house in Luzerne County’s west side. Today, some County Council members got a look inside Restorative Roots, a recovery house for people moving on from addiction. Recently the organization was awarded $125,000 from the county’s share of the Opioid Misuse Funds to keep the facility open and running. Joe Aiello dreamed of opening this facility after his recovery years ago. The house can accommodate between 6 to 8 residents at any given time. It offers a place to live, meals, personal products, strict rules, and house chores, but also and an opportunity for growth. Council members, Brittany Stevens; Vice-chair, Dawn Simmons, and Denise Williams chatted with Aiello, co-owner Kurt Krasavage and Beccie June, Director of Recovery Services about the need for funding and their mission to help people trying to fight back from addiction.

5 weeks until Election Day!

Ahead of each election the Bureau of Elections programs and tests all equipment used. This process is called Logic and Accuracy Testing (LAT). The County staff print and test ballots with pre-marked results to verify that each ballot cast for your candidate is a vote tallied for that candidate. This process is critical to ensure that every part of Election Day runs smoothly, it is basically a mock election to make sure every piece of equipment is functional, that ballots scan, and that recorded votes accurately transfer to the result reports you see on Election Night.
