🚨 Attention parents, before buying your child an e-bike, there are a few rules you need to know 🚲

👉 To classify as an e-bike, it must have fully operable pedals + electric motor of 750 watts or less.

California classifies e-bikes into 3 classes:

- Class 1: Pedal assist only, max of 20 MPH

- Class 2: Throttle-assisted, max of 20 MPH.

- Class 3: Pedal assist only, max of 28 MPH. (Rider must be 16+ and required to wear a helmet regardless of age)

* Class 1 or Class 3 may have start assistance or walk mode that propels on motor power alone, up to 3.7 MPH MAX.

🚳 It is NO longer an e-bike and treated as a motorcycle or moped if:

- Motor exceeds 750 watts

- Top speed exceeds class limits (over 20 MPH throttle or 28 MPH pedal assist)

- Modified to go faster than legal limits

These vehicles may not be ridden the same way as e-bikes and may require DMV registration, motorcycle license/endorsement, and insurance depending on where they are operated. Parents could also face liability if providing an illegal e-bike to kids.

Tips for parents: Stick to properly labeled, unmodified class 1-3 e-bikes. Always check the wattage, speed rating, and keep pedals functional. Lastly, always wear a helmet and follow the rules of the road.

🚨 Multi-County Pursuit 🚨

If you were traveling on southbound I-5 on Friday, October 2nd, your drive may have been interrupted by a large amount of law enforcement activity. Here is a brief summary of what happened.

CHP Red Bluff units attempted to make an enforcement stop on a white SUV when it failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated. The suspect vehicle continued to evade law enforcement personnel through Tehama County, Glenn County, and into Colusa County. The suspect vehicle briefly exited I-5 into the City of Williams where a CHP helicopter was able to direct responding units to its location. The suspect vehicle again failed to yield and returned to southbound I-5 where a CHP Williams Area unit was able to successfully deploy a spike strip north of Hahn Road disabling the vehicle. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle yielded and was taken into custody without incident. The suspect was later booked into the Tehama County Jail for felony evading and other charges.

🚨 MAXIMUM ENFORCEMENT PERIOD 🚨

It is with profound sadness that the California Highway Patrol announces the line-of-duty death of Officer Brian Liles of the Visalia Area.

On September 28, 2026, at approximately 5:11 p.m., CHP Motorcycle Officer Liles was involved in an on-duty traffic crash on State Route 99, just north of State Route 190 in Tipton. He sustained critical injuries and, despite lifesaving efforts, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Officer Liles, 44, served the people of California for more than 16 years. After graduating from the CHP Academy in 2010, he was assigned to the San Jose Area and later served in the Hayward and Fresno Areas before transferring to the Visalia Area in 2019.

Officer Liles is survived by his wife, two children, his parents, and two sisters.

The CHP extends its deepest condolences to Officer Liles' family, friends, loved ones, and all who served alongside him. His dedication to public service and commitment to protecting the people of California will not be forgotten.

From Friday, September 25 through Sunday, September 27, personnel from the Williams Area CHP had a great time at the annual Carnival hosted by the Colusa Rancheria. Officers spent the weekend meeting community members and answering questions on a wide range of topics.

A sincere thank you to the Cachil DeHe Band of Wintun Indians of the Colusa Indian Community of the Colusa Rancheria for inviting the CHP, California's State Police, to join the weekend of fun and festivities.

We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

This Maximum Enforcement Period is about more than enforcement. It’s about preventing the next tragedy.

From 6:00 p.m. October 2 through 5:59 a.m. October 3, CHP personnel of all ranks and assignments will be working throughout California, with a particular focus on identifying and removing impaired drivers from the road.

In 2017, CHP Officer Mark Latulippe’s family experienced a devastating loss caused by an impaired driver. Their story is told in the Emmy Award-winning CHP documentary Falling — a powerful reminder of why this work matters and what can happen when someone chooses to drive impaired.

This MEP isn’t about how many citations are written or arrests are made. It’s about preventing crashes, saving lives, and making sure more families make it home safely.

Drive sober. Arrive alive.
