Last week, five members of the Williamsburg Fire Department, including our Operational Medical Director (OMD), Dr. Gray, attended the 2026 EMS World Expo in Orlando, Florida.

EMS World Expo is one of the largest
international conferences and exhibitions dedicated to emergency medical services, bringing together EMS professionals, educators, medical directors, and industry
leaders to exchange best practices, explore emerging technologies, and discuss the evolving challenges and opportunities facing the EMS profession.

Areas of particular interest to WFD included advancements in patient care, EMS provider safety and wellness, quality improvement, and
the continued evolution of Mobile Integrated Healthcare programs.

We are incredibly fortunate and thankful to have such dedicated EMS providers who truly care about our community. Their commitment to continuously improving our EMS operations and enhancing patient care makes a meaningful difference every day. Thank you for your continued dedication to providing the highest level of care to those we serve!

Fire Prevention Week : Cooking Safety

Cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires. Following a few simple safety tips can help keep you and your family safe in the kitchen!

Cooking Safety Tips:

- Stay in the kitchen. Never leave cooking unattended, especially when frying, grilling, or broiling food.

- Dress for safety. Avoid wearing loose sleeves or robes that could catch fire or come into contact with hot burners.

- Stay alert. Never cook if you are drowsy from medication, alcohol, or lack of sleep.

- Keep combustibles away. Keep towels, paper products, oven mitts, and other items that can burn away from stovetops and other heat sources.

Remember: If a small grease fire starts in a pan, turn off the heat if it is safe to do so and cover the pan with a lid. Never use water on a grease fire! If the fire spreads or you feel unsafe, get outside and call 911.

A few simple precautions can make a big difference in preventing kitchen fires.

Fire Prevention Week Day 2: Home Escape Plans

When a fire starts, every second matters. Having a home fire escape plan can help get you and your family out safely.

Make sure your family:
—> Knows two ways out of every room whenever possible
—> Has a clear path to each exit
—> Chooses a safe meeting place outside, a safe distance from the home
—> Practices your escape plan at least twice a year
—> Knows to get outside and stay outside once you escape

Remember: You may have as little as 2 minutes to escape a home fire. Don’t wait until a fire happens to make a plan.

Take a few minutes today to talk with your family, make a plan, and practice it together.

Fire Prevention Week - Day 1: Smoke Alarms Save Lives!

Today marks the first day of Fire Prevention Week, and today’s focus is an important one: Smoke alarms

Smoke alarms detect small particles in the air produced by a fire. When those particles reach a certain level, the alarm sounds, providing an early warning and giving you valuable time to get outside.

Here are a few important smoke alarm reminders:

—> Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years from the date of manufacture.
—> Test your smoke alarms monthly to make sure they are working properly.
—> Change the batteries every 6 months, even if your smoke alarms are hardwired. Hardwired alarms typically have battery backups to keep them working during a power outage.
—> Make sure everyone in your household knows what the alarm sounds like and what to do when it activates.

Need a smoke alarm? The Williamsburg Fire Department offers a Smoke Alarm Program for City of Williamsburg residents. You can schedule a smoke alarm installation or service through our website.

Remember: When a smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside!

Stay tuned tomorrow as we continue Fire Prevention Week with Home Escape Plans!
