Statement from Rachel Wallace for Congress on Dan Meuser for Congress Backing Out of WVIA Debate Talks
POTTSVILLE, PA – Today WVIA Public Media informed the Wallace for Congress campaign that Republican incumbent Congressman Dan Meuser had backed out of talks for a WVIA-hosted debate tentatively scheduled for October 27.
Wallace released the following statement regarding Meuser’s decision:
“I am very disappointed that Dan Meuser has backed out of the negotiations with WVIA for a debate that was scheduled to air one week before the election. He’s previously said that he will only debate if he sees it in his interest. I guess showing up for his constituents in a public forum isn’t in his interest.
“This is yet another example of Dan Meuser never showing up for us. He doesn’t live in this community. He doesn’t vote for our interests. It’s almost like he couldn’t be bothered.
“People in this district are feeling the pain of Congress’s lack of action on affordability, from the price of gas and groceries to rising taxes and skyrocketing health insurance. Dan Meuser has done nothing. Perhaps that is why he won’t even face voters to defend his record. Either way, we know what to do on November 3.”
Rachel Wallace has been a vocal proponent of scheduled debates to inform voters. The news that Meuser is backing out of the October 10/27 debate comes a week after he agreed to an October 20 debate to be hosted by the Schuylkill County Chamber of Commerce. That debate reached its 250-person capacity within three hours of registration opening and has a waiting list, indicative of the high interest people have in hearing from both candidates.
Previously, Meuser told the Rocket-Courier that he would only participate in a debate that was “in [his] interest.”
WVIA first asked both candidates to debate in June this year, with negotiations for the debate beginning in earnest in September. The Wallace for Congress campaign accepted all guidelines proposed by WVIA, including the October 27 date; a proposal to broadcast the debate on TV, radio, and digital channels; and stipulations for a live studio audience that would include assigned seats for each campaign and the public.
WVIA sent the campaign an email this afternoon stating that “Congressman Meuser's campaign has informed WVIA that he is unable to participate in the proposed US 9th Congressional debate on October 27th at the WVIA Studios.”
Wallace’s campaign has announced seven town halls throughout the district in October. All town halls are free and open to the public.
“In the final weeks of this campaign, I’m looking forward to hearing from people in every corner of the district,” said Wallace. “I want to listen to their concerns, speak to their problems and bring people together to find solutions that work.”
