Gower School District 62 The Gower School District 62 mission is a simple one: Empowering children to be their best today to lead a better tomorrow.

Gower West and Gower Middle schools serve 940 students in grades PK – 8 living within district boundaries, which include portions of the villages of Burr Ridge, unincorporated Hinsdale, and Willowbrook. Gower West houses PK-4th grade students and 5th - 8th graders attend Gower Middle. The District offers an academically rigorous curriculum. Classroom instruction is tailored to the needs of individual students and technology enhances learning. Gower is a great place for kids to learn!

From first graders exploring plant life cycles at the Morton Arboretum to our PACE team analyzing real-world systems at Johansen Farms, hands-on learning took us beyond the classroom walls. Back at school, student-led affirmations kept our culture strong, while small-group Lunch Bunches created space for authentic peer connections. Whether on the trail or around the lunch table, our students are building knowledge, empathy, and leadership every day!

A quick note on homework from Gower Middle School! Homework helps students practice what they learn in class and grow as independent learners. Here is a general guide for how much time students can expect each day:

Grades 5 and 6: 45 to 60 minutes
Grades 7 and 8: 60 to 90 minutes

Teachers often give students time to start assignments in class so they can ask questions and get help. Some weekly assignments are given on Monday and due at the end of the week. We encourage students to work a little each day instead of saving it all for the weekend.

During our UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Initiative) phonics time, students are "flying through reading" as they map speech sounds directly to print. Through quick-paced blending drills, word chaining, and decodable stories, young readers are building automaticity—the ability to recognize words instantly without stumbling. When decoding becomes second nature, students' minds are freed up to focus on what matters most: comprehending and loving the story!

Calling all Gower basketball players! Boys basketball tryouts are open to students in grades 5 through 8.

When: Thursday, October 22 and Friday, October 23, 7:15 to 8:15 AM
Where: Old Gym (drop off at Door 6)

Players will go to class as usual after tryouts. Every player needs an updated physical on file with the front office before trying out, so please contact the school nurse with any questions. Work hard and get better.

Did you know that every single student at Gower West—all 405 Kindergartners through 4th graders—will earn their official Jr. License or Chromebook License this year? 🚗💻

When students act as "inspectors" at the classroom DMV, they practice evaluating expectations, holding one another accountable, and mastering executive function skills before taking their Chromebooks "on the road."

Students will complete a series of hands-on DMV (Device Management Verification) checkpoints with peer inspectors to build care, safety, and digital citizenship skills. Teaching tech responsibility early ensures every student builds confident, safe digital habits for life!
