Thomas A. Edison Charter School is located at 2200 N. Locust St, Wilmington, DE. We serve Grades K-8 Mission:
The mission of the Thomas A.

Edison Charter School serves 750 students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. We were established in 2000 to provide a rigorous education to a historically underserved population of families in North Wilmington. The Board of Directors, school leadership, and staff embrace a core philosophy summarized by these two statements.

1. All children are capable of learning at high levels if they are taught by caring and dedicated educators, challenged by an engaging and rigorous curriculum, afforded adequate time in school, and held to ambitious state and national standards.
2. Improvements in student performance can be achieved with an efficient school model that transforms how students are taught at every grade level. It is the goal of the Board of Directors, school leadership, teachers, and support staff of Thomas A. Edison Charter School to continually improve the ability of every student to be a critical thinker and to enable each child to meet or exceed the state and national curriculum standards. Edison Charter School is to provide a world-class education to students despite race, gender, and socio-economic status. In compliance with 14 Del. C., §501, Thomas Edison Charter School intends “to improve student learning; encourage the use of different and innovative or proven school environments and teaching and learning methods; provide parents and students with measures of improved school and student performance and greater opportunities in choosing public schools within and outside their school districts; and to provide for a well-educated community.”

In compliance with 14 Del. C., §506, Thomas Edison “shall not charge tuition or have admissions requirements.” Edison Charter School will be a fully funded, superior K-8 charter school pursuing excellence, where all children who attend will be able to matriculate into the most prestigious high schools and colleges. The school will be a pillar in the community, inspiring hope, building pride, and reaching high expectations.

Since 2008, Mr. Pressey has been impacting the lives of Thomas Edison Charter School students as their physical educaction teacher covering a wide range of physical fitness, athletics, and wellness topics for our young Knights.

DID YOU KNOW? Before he taught at TECS, Mr. Pressey accumulated 1,794 career rushing yards as a running back for the University of Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens from 1998 to 2001. A local standout from Newark High School, he ranks 15th on Delaware's all-time career rushing list! 🏈

Regarding his near two-decade tenure on the TECS staff, he says, "I couldn't have asked for a better school to teach and give some of my experiences to the children who are from the same neighborhoods and backgrounds that I came from." 🎓🏫

The fourth grade is going back to the Middle Ages. Our young Knights are diving deep into social studies and reading curricula (CKLA: Core Knowledge Language Arts), learning about medieval life: social classes, castles, chivalry, trade, and major events, and how history relates to where we come from and where we are going. This unit will culminate with students writing a persuasive piece about their choice to be a serf, lord, a monk/priest or even a king or queen!

🎶🎨 Celebrating National Arts in Education Week at Thomas Edison Charter School!

At Thomas Edison, we believe that the visual arts are an important part of your child’s education and students receive art instruction every other day for 40 minutes. Students will be provided with a discipline based art education curriculum, which includes art history, art criticism, studio art, and aesthetics. 🖌

In Music, TECS student have opportunities throughout their K-8 journey. General Music (grades K-3), Junior Choir and Recorder Karate (grades 3-5), Concert Choir and World Drumming (grades 6-8) all allow students to achieve in terms of musical expression, rhythm, form, melody, timbre, texture, harmony, and much more. 🎵

We are so thrilled to present the Thomas Edison Charter School STEM Center made possible by our partners at the Cal Ripken Sr., Foundation, the Exelon Foundation, and Delmarva Power (Delmarva Connect). Tonight, with help from several very excited TECS students, we held our ribbon-cutting ceremony. Thank you to everyone who made this gift possible and for everyone who helped us celebrate this momentous occasion at TECS which will help shape our students for years to come. 📚🧬✖️🖨️
